Sinead Kavanagh won’t let a loss stop her from chasing her dreams.
The Bellator women’s featherweight contender is still aiming to become champion in the promotion despite her coming up short in her title fight against Cris Cyborg this past November. Kavanagh (7-5 MMA, 4-5 BMMA) was knocked out by the champion in less than two minutes into their main event contest at Bellator 271.
It was a tough loss for Kavanagh, but not one that will redefine her championship goals.
“I’m toe-to-toe with the best in the world, you know?” Kavanagh told reporters at the Bellator 275 pre-fight media day. “Obviously, it didn’t go my way, but there’s nothing to be ashamed of. I’ll do it again and next time I’ll correct my mistakes.”
Kavanagh has an opportunity to get back on track to a title shot, as she returns to the cage this Friday in the co-main event of Bellator 275 in Dublin, Ireland. The 36-year-old takes on rising contender Leah McCourt.
It didn’t take long for Kavanagh to get back to work following her championship defeat. Her second run at the women’s featherweight title starts with McCourt.
“Straight away (I wanted to fight again),” Kavanagh said. “I went with the best in the world. I set a goal to fight for a world title and I achieved that goal to fight for a world title. I didn’t achieve it this time around, but I’m hoping to bring it home, I really am. I know I can do it. After that defeat, it’s just like, ‘Let’s go again. I took a few weeks off and nothing to be ashamed of.”
