Max Griffin may be enduring a rough stretch, but he insists he’s capable of so much more.
Griffin (15-8 MMA, 3-6 UFC) has lost four of his past five, with two of those losses coming via split decision. In his most recent outing, he was edged out by Alex Oliveira at UFC 248 in March.
Reflecting on his dip in form, Griffin said he’s been working hard to make specific adjustments to his game to prevent him from losing close fights on the scorecards moving forward, and said he’s confident things will start to pick up on his return.
“I got something for everybody,” Griffin recently told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’m getting better, and it’s interesting now – I always feel like that I’ve never been an easy fight. Every fight that I’ve ever lost, it was a split. Other than Colby Covington, but that was a little bit different, mentally and that, but since then, any fight I’ve been in since, you can say I won. It depends who you’re asking, so I train with a lot of good guys, and now I’m starting to understand angles now.
“It’s like this whole time I didn’t understand angles, and I got this far without distance and patience. What happened (was) I hurt my hamstring about five months ago, so I had to switch to southpaw. So going to southpaw really showed me what angles are – it was like an epiphany. Now I know what angles are. This whole time I didn’t understand angles.”
Griffin faces newcomer Ramiz Brahimaj at UFC on ESPN+ 40 on Nov. 7 in Las Vegas and, having spent his training camp at Team Alpha Male, Griffin said he is ready to realize his full potential.
“I’m a lot more versatile now,” he said. “I know that I don’t have to rush, and I won’t, and that’s helped me tremendously these past six months. I feel like I’m so close, even my record with these guys that I lost to, or if it went my way like it should have, I’d be top-15, easy. So I know this. I’m ready to shine and eliminate this guy.”
