Irene Aldana undergoes successful foot surgery, expects early 2021 return

Irene Aldana should be back in the cage by early 2021.

The UFC bantamweight contender successfully underwent surgery for a broken left foot last week and is expected to recover and be able to fully start training in December.

In a statement given to MMA Junkie, Aldana (12-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC) said she’s feeling well and hopes to return to the competition in the first quarter of 2021.

“Everything went well with the surgery,” Aldana said. “Doctors are asking for three days of rest and after the fourth day I have a check up to see how everything is going.  After that day, I will start therapy, rehabilitation, and gradually training at least upper body.

“On the second week I might be able to start light training full body gradually. If all goes well, I should be able to start training camp in a month and I should be ready to fight in February or March. It all depends how my body reacts to the operation. But if all goes well, I should be back around February or March. I’m eager to reclaim an opportunity to fight for the belt.”

Aldana suffered a broken left foot in an accident hitting pads two days prior her main event bout against Holly Holm at UFC on ESPN 16 on Oct. 4 in Abu Dhabi. The Mexican fighter lost the bout via unanimous decision, ending a two-fight win streak.

The 32-year-old, who trains out of Lobo Gym in Guadalajara, is currently ranked No. 5 in the UFC official women’s 135 pound rankings.
