It turns out the alleged gunman in a San Antonio shooting is not a UFC fighter

The alleged gunman who claimed to be a UFC fighter before opening fire outside a Texas bar thankfully is not a UFC fighter.

On Thursday, U.S. Marshals arrested 37-year-old Jenelius Crew in Miami and charged him with eight counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said in a statement.

The charges stem from a shooting last Friday in San Antonio, where a man shot eight people with a rifle in the parking lot of a venue called Rebar. The man was part of a group denied entrance into the bar because they were “inebriated,” according to San Antonio police Chief William McManus. He then went to his car to retrieve a gun and returned, opening fire. Nobody was killed.

The strange twist in this story is what happened after the man was stopped at the door and before he went back to his car. According to McManus, he told bar security: “Don’t you know who I am? I’m a UFC fighter from California.”

That, however, is not the case. There’s no indication that Crew ever has fought for the UFC. Whether or not he’s an MMA fighter at all is in question, as nothing turns up in Tapology’s fighter database when you search his name, where he’d almost certainly be listed if he’s ever competed.

Dana White said last week that he hoped it wasn’t true about the shooter being a fighter for his promotion. The UFC boss can now breathe easy.

Why this man would blurt out that he’s a UFC fighter before going on a shooting spree is anyone’s guess.
