John Kavanagh expects early summer return for Conor McGregor: ‘He’s being sensible’

"

Conor McGregor is on track for a return in the summer of 2022.

According to the former two-division champion’s head coach, John Kavanagh, McGregor is on a solid path to recovery from the horrific leg injury he suffered in the trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

“We’re not back to MMA training yet, but he can do all the strength and conditioning, and he’s being sensible about the approach of it,” Kavanagh told MMA Junkie. “I do a little bit of talks at local schools in Dublin and I will always use him as an example of what we can do in life when we get setbacks. There’s nobody that comes back better than him. There’s nobody that uses losses to fuel themself to learn new things about their body, to learn new things about training, and come back and do very well.”

McGregor has kept his name in the headlines since the injury by calling out numerous fighters on social media and an incident with Machine Gun Kelly at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Many fighters have thrown their name in the hat for the opportunity to square off against the Irishman, but the former champ only seems interested in fighting for gold. Most recently, McGregor angled for a fight against the current lightweight champion Charles Oliveira after he defended his title for the first time by defeating Poirier by submission at UFC 269.

No matter who the opponent will be standing across the cage from McGregor when he makes his return, Kavanagh is confident that his return will be a strong one.

“He has his wins, he has his losses, but he’s never going to quit,” Kavanagh said about McGregor’s perseverance. “He always picks himself back up again and goes back in. That’s really, for me, is what life’s all about. We’re all going to have failures, we’re all going to have setbacks.”

When can fans expect to see McGregor back inside the cage?

“I would say early summer,” Kavanagh said. “I think he’s on target for that. I’ll be meeting him, he’s back in Dublin now, so I’ll see him when I go back home to Ireland. I’m sure we’ll have a Proper 12 to celebrate Christmas, and then set a time for making a comeback.”
