Khabib Nurmagomedov shuts down Conor McGregor question

Khabib Nurmagomedov apparently doesn’t want to talk about Conor McGregor any more.

The UFC lightweight champion shut down a question about his longtime rival during a Friday conference call ahead of UFC 242, declaring he wanted to “talk about real stuff” before the Sept. 7 pay-per-view.

A reporter’s question about McGregor was indeed tied to some very real stuff. Just before UFC 223, the Irish star and his teammates infamously attacked a transport bus carrying Nurmagomedov just days before a title fight, leading to criminal charges and an eventual plea deal with prosecutors.

The question was whether Nurmagomedov was worried about another such incident in the future, and it came less than one day after the UFC lightweight champ declared his rivalry with McGregor could lead to another conflict in the street. But he quickly bristled at the topic after answering questions about his upcoming opponent, interim champ Dustin Poirier.

“Honestly, I don’t understand what you’re asking about,” Nurmagomedov said. “This guy, when he win last time? Why you keep talking about this guy? This guy has done nothing in two years, and we keep talking about this guy. I don’t want to talk about him. We have Dustin Poirier.”

Poirier seeks to unify the title he won in April at UFC 236. The interim champ’s record is marked by defeats to McGregor at featherweight and Michael Johnson at lightweight – two opponents Nurmagomedov has finished.

Nurmagomedov takes no extra confidence from that fact, pointing out Poirier’s incredible run at 155 pounds. He is focused on taking out the interim champ and defending his crown before an audience expected to favor him in the Muslim-majority Abu Dhabi.
