Khamzat Chimaev on Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington: ‘Both tough guys, but nothing special’

Khamzat Chimaev is not short on confidence – even when it pertains to the champion.

Just three UFC fights in, Chimaev (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has risen into one of the most dominant forces in the sport and he’s ready to shoot straight for the top. The 27-year-old Chechnya-born fighter takes on his first ranked opponent in Li Jingliang (18-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) this Saturday at UFC 267, but already sees the bigger picture.

When asked about the upcoming welterweight title fight between champion Kamaru Usman (19-1 MMA, 14-0 UFC) and Colby Covington (16-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) at UFC 268, Chimaev wasn’t all too impressed.

“Maybe it’ll go to a decision, maybe someone will get a knockout, both guys tough guys but nothing special,” Chimaev told UFC Arabia. “Same thing, both wrestlers and a little bit striking.”

Usman is currently the UFC’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter and that excites Chimaev, who hopes to be the man to dethrone him – if he’s still there.

“I hope so, but this guy is – how old is he? Like 35?,” Chimaev said. “He doesn’t have so much time now, but I’m coming for him before he goes.”

He continued, “I will be best fighter in this game and when I finish I want to be remembered like best fighter in this world, pound-for-pound No. 1 and take the belt. As many as possible, maybe two, maybe three.”

UFC 267 takes place Saturday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The card streams on ESPN+
