The Nominees

Eddie Alvarez def. Eduard Folayang at ONE Championship 99

Eddie Alvarez (30-7) had chance at redemption following his unsuccessful ONE Championship debut, and he clinched it, albeit not without a few scary moments in his lightweight grand prix semifinal with Eduard Folayang (21-8).

Early in the opening frame, Folayang chopped Alvarez down with a brutal leg kick. Vicious ground and pound followed, but Alvarez somehow survived. A slick reversal landed Alvarez on top, and within moments, he moved to the back of Folayang and locked in a deep rear-naked choke for the win in just over two minutes.

Matt Schnell def. Jordan Espinosa at UFC on ESPN 5

Matt Schnell (13-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) lived up to his “Danger” nickname with a quick submission win of Jordan Espinosa (14-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in their flyweight matchup. In fact, it came with some history attached.

Espinosa thought he’d gotten free of an early guillotine choke attempt, only to find himself stuck in a triangle choke that forced him to tap just 83 seconds after the fight began. Not only was it the second fastest submission in flyweight history, but it was also the first finish by triangle choke in the division’s history in the UFC.

Jim Miller def. Clay Guida at UFC on ESPN 5

Jim Miller became the fifth fighter to join the 20-win UFC club in a fight with Clay Guida that represented the most octagon experience for a single matchup in UFC history.

Despite all that cage time, Miller and Guida didn’t spend long fighting each other. After a back-and-forth striking exchange to begin the contest, Miller jumped on a guillotine choke. The New Jersey native wasn’t letting go in front of his hometown crowd, and he squeezed until Guida was out cold.

Veronica Macedo def. Polyana Viana at UFC on ESPN+ 14

Veronica Macedo (6-3-1 MMA, 1-3 UFC) isn’t paid by the hour. So, when she stepped into the cage to fight Polyana Viana (10-4 MMA, 1-3 UFC) she made sure to finish the fight as quickly as possible.

Just 69 seconds into the first round, Macedo submitted Viana with a slick armbar. While she initially didn’t have the proper grip, Macedo made some adjustments which forced Viana into verbal submission.

Aviv Gozali def. Eduard Muravitskiy at Bellator 225

It only took Aviv Gozali (3-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) 11 seconds to imanari roll his way into the fastest stoppage victory in Bellator history against Eduard Muravitskiy (9-9 MMA, 0-1 BMMA).

The 18-year-old Israeli fighter started out the bout with one move on his mind – a heel hook. As the opening bell sounded, Gozali rolled towards opponent Muravitskiy and snatched a leg. A few adjustments, and Gozali forced the tap by heel hook for a third consecutive win to open his career.

The Winner: Jim Miller

Guida stunned Miller with a punch, only to walk into one that helped bring a battle of hardened UFC vets to a quick close.

Miller quickly capitalized on the momentum shift and secured a guillotine choke on Guida that ended the fight 58 seconds into the first round.

Miller, who recently flirted with retirement after a serious health scare from lyme disease, picked up his second straight win and is now 3-1 since a four-fight skid.

The fight had barely gotten started when Guida landed a right hand that took Miller’s legs from under him. Guida charged in hoping to close out the action and took a left straight that sat him down.

Miller hopped into the guillotine choke and cranked until it was clear Guida was unconscious. But referee Herb Dean failed to stop the fight for several seconds as Miller continued to crank the submission until the action was finally stopped.
