Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What’s next for Max Holloway, key UFC 240 winners?

After every event, fans wonder whom the winners will be matched up with next.

With another night of UFC action in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look forward, put on a pair of Sean Shelby and Mick Maynard’s shoes, and play UFC matchmaker for UFC 240’s key winning fighters.

Those included Max Holloway (21-4 MMA, 17-4 UFC), who defended his UFC featherweight title against Frankie Edgar in the main event at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as well as Cris Cyborg (21-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC), Geoff Neal (12-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC), Niko Price (14-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), and Deiveson Figueiredo (16-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC)

Deiveson Figueiredo

Should fight: Tim Elliott

Tim Elliott.

Why they should fight: Figueiredo rebounded from his first career loss against Jussier Formiga in March with a strong performance in a unanimous-decision win over Alexandre Pantoja that was deemed “Fight of the Night.”

There was some talk the Figueiredo vs. Pantoja fight could be a title eliminator at flyweight, but with champion Henry Cejudo still recovering from injury and likely to defend against Joseph Benavidez in his return, that leaves Figueiredo in something of an awkward position.

Sitting on the sidelines and waiting for the opportunity could prove challenging given the timeframe, so it would be in his best interest to take another fight to hold him over in the meantime. Elliott (15-8 MMA, 4-6 UFC) has been out of action since December 2017 due to injury, but he is on the comeback trail, and a fight with Figueiredo would have big-time implications at 125 pounds.

Geoff Neal

Should fight: Winner of Vicente Luque vs. Mike Perry at UFC on ESPN+ 14

Mike Perry.

Why they should fight: Neal showed some new layers to his game when he used wrestling and ground-and-pound to finish Niko Price by second-round TKO in an effort that earned him “Performance of the Night” honors.

With a shiny 4-0 record inside the octagon and an elite team behind him at Fortis MMA, Neal has proven himself worthy of a matchup with a top-15 opponent in the welterweight division.

Many of the relevant names in the weight class are currently booked, but pairing Neal against the winner of Luque (16-6-1 MMA, 9-2 UFC) vs. Perry (13-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC), who meet at UFC on ESPN+ 14 on Aug. 10, would have major action potential.

Cris Cyborg

Should fight: Amanda Nunes

Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes.

Why they should fight: This one isn’t particularly complicated. After Cyborg defeated Felicia Spencer by unanimous decision in an entertaining affair, the only pairing that makes sense for her going forward is a rematch with Nunes (18-4 MMA, 10-1 UFC).

However, that’s entirely contingent on whether Cyborg sticks around the UFC, which at this point feels like no guarantee.

The tone from both Cyborg and UFC president Dana White post-fight didn’t inspire a ton of confidence the Brazilian signs a new deal after she fought out her contract against Spencer. If she can come to terms, though, a second fight with Nunes is completely logical after Nunes ended Cyborg’s more than 13-year unbeaten streak with a stunning 51-second knockout at UFC 232 in December.

Max Holloway

Should fight: Alexander Volkanovski
Why they should fight: Watch the video above to see why Holloway should fight Volkanovski (21-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) next for his fourth title defense.

Michael Bisping warns Michael Chandler not to underestimate Conor McGregor: ‘Can’t be drunk on your own ego’

Michael Bisping thinks Michael Chandler would be making a grave mistake by underestimating Conor McGregor. Chandler (23-8 MMA, 2-3 UFC) welcomes McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) back in a welterweight bout, which headlines UFC 303 June 29 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). McGregor hasn’t competed...

Karine Silva explains how fast UFC rise was actually deceivingly long

LAS VEGAS – Karine Silva has heard the praise. Even though the narratives are largely complementary, Silva (17-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC) admits her run toward UFC notoriety isn’t as quick and effortless as it may seem. “It wasn’t quick, guys. It wasn’t fast,” Silva told MMA Junkie and other...
