UFC 220 play-by-play and live results

BOSTON – MMAjunkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC 220 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at TD Garden in Boston. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic (17-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) takes on challenger Francis Ngannou (11-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC). In the co-feature, light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier (19-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) puts his title on the line against Volkan Oezdemir (15-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC).

Dustin Ortiz vs. Alexandre Pantoja

Round 1 – Ortiz counters a charge with a low kick. Pantoja back in and gets stuck in clinch, and Ortiz puts him on the mat, taking the back in the process. Pantoja grabs for a kneebar, and then takes the back in scramble. Ortiz works to get free and elbows backward with Pantoja’s arms around his waist. Knees to the body from Pantoja, who’s working for a choke. Hooks in as Ortiz punches back. Stalemate as Pantoja grabs an arm. Pantoja punches to the flanks as he wraps the head. Ortiz adjusts and fights the hands. Body triangle for Pantoja. Ortiz nearly puts himself in a choke trying to get around Pantoja’s arms. Pantoja close on his arms, and Ortiz tries to spin free. Body triangle prevents that. Ortiz’s hand fighting is giving Pantoja fits in trying to finish that last bit of technique. Ortiz scoots back to the cage, and he’s got nowhere to go as Pantoja cranks on his neck. Less than one minute to go. Ortiz finally gets a window with Pantoja’s leg positioning and gets free, immediately driving for a takedown before advancing to top position and firing awawy with punches. Ortiz goes for the choke but runs out of time before he can complete. MMAjunkie scores the opening frame 10-9 for Pantoja.

Round 2 – Ortiz in quick, looking for opprtunites, and after a brief exchange ducks under for a takedown. Pantoja stays calm and evades punches, but Ortiz sneaks in a right hand. Pantoja working on the counter as Ortiz stays in his face and fires off combo after combo. Low single fails for Ortiz, but he continues to charge in. Body kick for Ortiz. Pantoja moving a different speed in this frame. Ortiz with a right hand. Body kick for Pantoja. Ortiz superman into a takedown attempt, and Ortiz wheels to the back and hangs on Pantoja when he pops up. Transition to double, then Ortiz to the back against the fence. Wrestling scramle as Ortiz knees the legs and body. Finally, he drags his man down. Pantoja fighting every inch of the takedown war. Ortiz hanging on him, kneeing the legs. Pantoja finally powers up, but Ortiz pushes him to the mat. Reversal attempt fails. Ortiz still has that bodylock. Pantoja muscles back, reversing position, before both fighters reset. Ortiz attacks the leg as Pantoja closes, and the two trade right hands before Ortiz shoots in again. Takedown for Ortiz, but Pantoja quickly counters and sits up. Ortiz still has the bodylock and is hanging on Pantoja against the fence as he takes knees to the legs. MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-9 for Ortiz, evening it up at 19-19.

Round 3 – Pantoja inches in and sinks a right as Ortiz counters. Right hook prompts takedown from Ortiz, and Pantoja tries an armbar before missing and scrambling his way to a top position. Scooting to the cage, Ortiz elbows and punches as Pantoja tries to flatten him. It’s a reversal of the previous round, but this time, it’s Pantoja trying to smother Ortiz. Pantoja sinks in hooks as Ortiz gives his back. Ortiz working his way up and gets there. Pantoja throws him back to the mat and takes back control against the fence. Ortiz fighting the legs with his own, but again, the bodylock is preventing him from getting free. Pantoja tries to wrap the head as Ortiz sits up and tries to turn out again. Now, Ortiz stands and tries to buck Pantoja. This is the strategy that works, and Ortiz has top position with 90 seconds to go in the round. Punches from up top, and a wild scramble puts them back on their feet. Ortiz punches in and drives for a takedown against the fence. Single leg attempt puts Ortiz at the back, kneeing the legs as Pantoja posts with his arms. Punches and knees from Ortiz at Pantoja’s back. Ortiz looking for one last takedown, and appears to land an illegal knee. Final flurry of punches land for Ortiz in the final frame. It’s a close one, but MMAjunkie gives Ortiz the frame 10-9, giving him the 29-28 score. Wouldn’t be surprising to see a split decision, however, or for it to go Pantoja’s way.

Dan Ige vs. Julio Arce

Round 1 – Arce jabs in measuring range. Ige pushes back and fires off a counter. Arce clips him with a head kick, but Ige pushes through and wraps the body before briefly putting Arce on the mat. Arce pops up and fights the takedown before Ige reconsiders and backs off. Arce working the jab as Ige advances. Front kick stops Ige. So far, Arce playing the counter game. Ige whiffs on a straight right. Arce briefly gives up a takedown and pops up against the cage. Ige grabs a plumb and fires off a knee before resetting. Ige back in and misses on a right, and the two spin in the clinch. Arce keeps control and pushes off Ige. Nice one-two from Arce, who’s punches are straighter and more well-measured. Ige, meanwhile, wings big hooks and tries to bully with explosive movements. Arce with a front kick. Right hook stings Ige, who quickly shoots for takedown. He grabs a leg, and Arce won’t let him have it. Arce on the hunt, and clips Ige with a right hand. Ige covering up and takes a few more shots before Arce backs off and resets. Left hand good for Arce. He’s slowly stalking Ige now, and another left timed perfectly. Takedown too easily spotted by Arce, who denies the shot and pushes Ige off to end the frame. MMAjunkie scores the first round 10-9 for Arce.

Round 2 – Arce jabs in, then switches to a right. Ige charges with a left hook and resets. Body kick good for Ige, who ducks his head and takes a jab. Ige charges again with a hook and runs into an elbow. Arce tries a counter and is a bit short, but in the next exchange he times a three-piece combo. The two work in close in the clinch before resetting. Arce working that left straight. Ige getting clipped with it. Arce charges in and lands an uppercut. Ige gets him back with a right hand on the next mixup. Ige takes a front kick to the body and circles off. He wants the clinch and can’t get his arms around Arce’s body. In close, Arce fires off a five punch combo, and again his left hand has Ige shooting for a takedown. No dice. Blood from Ige’s nose. Arce jabbing into his straight left. He’s controlling the standup action so far. Ige’s aggressiveness isn’t matched by accuracy. But just then, he manages to land a left hook. Ige drives for another takedown off an exchange, and Arce grabs the fence to keep himself upright. Ige working hard on a single, and Arce contemplates an arm triangle. Spinning back elbow misses for Ige, and Arce is free. Right hook lands for Ige, but another takedown is stuffed, and Arce ends the round standing overhead. MMAjunkie scores the second frame 10-9 for Arce, who is up 20-18.

Round 3 – Touch of gloves, and Ige fires off a leg kick. Arce waiting for the counter, and digs a body kick as Ige ducks his head. Leg kicks draw combos for Arce. When Ige misses, Arce moves into range and fires off combinations of punches. Ige covering up, but he takes a heavy straight left. Arce’s timing is just superior. Arce corners his foe and looks for big shots. Ige wings a hook and escapes with it. Straight left pops Arce in nose. Duck and counters from Arce. Right hook prompts clinch battle, and Ige drops for a takedown before a body shot nails him. Arce resets and Ige gets up. It isn’t long before he’s back in on the takedown, using a hook to initiate. Arce staying in his face and ripping off combos. Ige lands a left hook. Arce with his own off an exchange. Ige’s face is bloody. Another clean counter by Arce as Ige comes in. Big uppercut for Ige in close, and that’s been the best shot of the fight for him. But Arce is still there and had 75 seconds to work. Back in Ige’s face and dodging big shots. Nice left counter for Arce. Ige kicks the legs and fires off a straight right. Arce back with his left. Ige blocks the next combo, but a left hook rocks him. ige charge into the clinch and misses and the two flurry in the final seconds. Arce slips in a few punches as the fight comes to an end. MMAjunkie scores the final frame 10-9 for Arce, giving him the 30-27 decision.

Matt Bessette vs. Enrique Barzola

Round 1 – Barzola with hands low, looking for opportunities. Bessette inches in as Barzola waits for counter. Both men hand fighting. Bessette tries a straight right and takes a leg kick. Barzola with another leg kick. Barzola winds up and misses on a right hand. Bessette combo blocked, but a right hand is good off a leg kick. Bessette punches in and misses, and Barzola’s reply is a bit short as well. Nice body kick for Bessette. Barzola backs up and uses the fence to kick, drawing a warning from the ref. So far, the most authorative attack is Barzola’s leg kicks. Bessette misses barely on a head kick. Barzola body kick good, but still not much doing. Bessette bullies in close and lands a right, and Barzola replies with a left hook. Two minutes left and Bessette sticks a head kick. Barzola still hanging tough, and he grabs for the clinch in the next exchange. Again, Barzola backs up and draws Bessette into a takedown attempt. Elevates, and slams Bessette to the mat. Quick pass for Barzola, who gets caught in the legs and stands up. Punch to the body. Bessette scoots pu and back to the cage and tries to grab for a leg. Barzola withdraws and then comes in with punches. Too much space, and Bessette up with a kick. Jab from Bessette draws another takedown attempt, and Barzola works against the cage before withdrawing. Bessette fires off with a head kick and punches, and the round ends before he can get much going. MMAjunkie scores the opening frame 10-9 for Barzola.

Round 2 – Blood from Barzola, and not clear where it’s coming from. Bessette inches in and fires off a kick and punch. Barzola uses leg to keep distance and reset. Body kick pushes Bessette back, and he tries a few hook kicks before beating up the body. Barzola leaps with a knee, but it’s blocked. Bessette still looking for that head kick and sticks a nice jab. They trade leg kicks. Leg kick sweeps Bessette off his feet, and he pops up. Bessette punches in and clinches, and both peel off. So far, Barzola able to absorb most of the shots and reply with leg kicks. He ties up on Bessette’s next charge and walks them to the cage. Bessette breaks off and looks for opportunities. Barzola not there for his big right hand. A subsequent combo draws another clinch from Barzola, who again elevates Bessette and slams the fight to the mat. Barzola stands over Bessette, who wheels his legs and tries to grab and ankle. Barzola sits down and lands a few big punches from overhead. Ninety seconds left, and Barzola punches the body. Bessette pops up again and moves into the clinch, drawing another takedown attempt against the cage. Barzola converts a scramble into a takedown, and again, he stands overhead before firing down punches. Bessette scoots up, and Barzola presses back into the clinch. Against the cage, Barzola looking for a single. Bessette turns out and gets caught in double underhooks. Barzola closes the round with another big takedown. MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-9 for Barzola, putting him up 20-18.

Round 3 – Barzola stretches out his arms to pump up the crowd. Bessette comes charging and fires off a combo of punches. Most miss, but a left hook lands. Barzola’a head movement saving him from the majority of Bessette’s offsense. A body kick nearly provides a clinch opportunity, but Bessette escapes. He comes in again and draws another clinch. Barzola doing a good job of turning his body and avoiding big shots. Nice jabs set up big right hand for Barzola. Bessette misses on a pair of uppercuts and takes another leg kick. Uppercut good for Bessette, who takes a left hook in counter. Every time he punches in, Barzola shuts him down in close with the clinch. Barzola rolling with Bessette’s right hand, and barely misses getting clipped by a knee. Clinch and break, clinch and break as both fighters try to land punches. Barzola lands a leg kick before pushing in for a takedown against the fence. He elevates Bessette and gets another high amplitude takedown. Bessette tries a rubber guard and can’t get the position. Punches from up top for Barzola, who stands over hand as Bessette kicks up. Bessette again gets up and they trade kicks. Barzola to the leg. Neither fighters is going to finish this, but Bessette tries a head kick and the two fling big punches as the round comes to a close. No fight-altering shots, and time runs out. MMAjunkie scores the final frame 10-9 for Barzola, who gets the 30-27 decision on our scorecard.

Islam Makhachev vs. Gleison Tibau

Round 1 – Touch of gloves, and we’re underway. Tibau jabs in as Makhachev circles. Both men center cage, pawing, and Makhachev with a front kick. Leg return for Tibau, who closes in and tries a head kick. Feints from Makhachev. Tibau attempts a kick to the leg, but before he even gets it out, Makhachev counters with a left hook that drops him to the mat. Makhachev pounces and punches, and Tibau is out. Fight over. Impressive finish from Makhachev.
