UFC 222 play-by-play and live results

LAS VEGAS – MMAjunkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC 222 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg (19-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) puts her title on the line against Yana Kunitskaya (10-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC). In the co-feature, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (22-5-1 MMA, 16-5-1 UFC) takes on Brian Ortega (13-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in a likely featherweight title eliminator.

Jordan Johnson vs. Adam Milstead

Round 1 – A few punches exchanged in the middle miss before low kicks land for both. Big punches follow fro both, but they fail to connect. Steady pace to start, but they’re both throwing with bad intentions. Milstead lands with a right over the top. He slips a left and lands an uppercut. Johnson holding the center, but Milstead countering well. Low kicks traded again. Milstead with another right hand over his opponent’s low kick. Johnson drives in for a takedown, but Milstead bounces off the cage and pulls away. He kist misses a big right hand. Johnson back inside on the takedown. He presses the action to the cage. Milstead defending against the fence. Short knees inside for Johnson. Stall against the cage. Milstead trying to work free. Johnson staying busy enough to hold the spot but not doing much damage. Milstead gets his hands inside, and they split and return to the center. Milstead immediately throwing big shots. His corner yells for him to “stay frosty.” In the final minute. They end on the feet. MMAjunkie leans toward Milstead, 10-9.

Round 2 – Johnson with some early success on the feet, popping out the left. Milstead rushes forward with a right, but his knee buckles. He scrambles up and tries to balance, but Johnson is inside on the takedown. Again the action is against the cage. Johnson with some short punches to the body and leg as he looks to change levels. Milstead tries to punch back, but it lets Johnson get tighter on his legs. Still, Milstead defending well against the cage. Johnson staying busy with short punches. There’s really nothing on them, and Milstead looks bored. Referee Mark Smith breaks them apart. Big right hand for Milstead on the restart. Johnson changes levels and does get the action to the floor this time. Milstead immediately turns and rises to a knee. Johnson stays tight, but Milstead crawl to his feet. One minute left, and the action is still against the fence. Milstead defending well but not able to offer much offense in return. Johnson stomps the feet. Still a bit of stall, and Smith quicker on the restart this time. Milstead with a low kick, but Johnson counters well with a jab. Round ends there. MMAjunkie gives it to Johnson, 10-9.

Round 3 – Big punches to start. Fight seems to hang in the balance. Low kick from Johnson, but he eats a big right over the top. Johnson shoots, but Milstead battles him with his hands, lands a knee and then pushes him away. Milstead just misses a big right over the top. He seems to be the fighter with the most pop in his hands right now. Johnson pushes inside, but there’s nothing there, so he backs away. Milstead is bleeding a little bit from the corner of his right eye. They’re trading in the pocket in the center. Johnson is landing with his left hand, and the damage around the right eye is increasing. Milstead trying to set up the big right, but Johnson slipping well. Two minutes left. Johnson gets deep on a single-leg takedown. Milstead battles at first, but he’s taken to the floor. Milstead quickly works to his knee, but Johnson drags him back to the floor. Still, Johnson does work up to his feet. Less than a minute, and Milstead is defending against the cage. Milstead lands a sweeping right hand. Johnson lefts the leg high in the air, but Milstead stays upright. Milstead slips off the cage in the final seconds and lands a few big shots in a flurry, but it’s too little, too late. MMAjunkie gives the final round to Johnson, 10-9, awarding him the fight 29-28.

Bryan Caraway vs. Cody Stamann

Round 1 – Stamann out quickly to the center. Caraway fakes a bit on the outside, judging his opponent’s movements. Caraway drops for a takedown but can’t get the leg. He does grab the right leg on the second effort, lifting it high in the air. Stamann with great balance to stay upright. He lands a few left hands while defending against the cage. Caraway stays tight, then briefly backs away and immediately shoots again, but Stamann up tot he challenge. Caraway backs to the center and resets. Stamann holds his hands low, showing no respect for his opponent’s striking. Caraway drives in again, but Stamann again defends with ease and backs up to the fence. Halfway through the first. Stamann defending well and punching when he can. Caraway has to back to the center. Stamann lands a nice right hand. They trade shots on the feet. Stamann seems to be the faster man. Caraway relentless on the takedown, and he finally gets the action to the floor. Stamann grabs the neck but has to fall to his back, settling for half-guard. He tries to switch past the legs, but Stamann grabs half-guard on the other side. Caraway controlling well from the top. He wants to step over and does get to side control. Caraway steps over the head with the left leg and triangles the position. He’s working on the left arm, but time winding down. He tries to rip the kimura, but Stamann defends until the bell. MMAjunkie gives the first to Caraway, 10-9.

Round 2 – Stamann looking to strike in the early going. He’s got the edge on the feet, and he’s trying to be a little more aggressive to open. Caraway keeps his hands high and swings back, though he does shoot on the firs opening. Caraway lands a right hand, and Stamann just smiles and shakes it off. Fake shot from Caraway into another uppercut. Caraway mixing it up well. Now the fake uppercut into the takedown, though Stamann defends well. Knee inside scores for Stamann, though Caraway answers back with a right hand. They’re trading on the feet. Caraway does get deep on a double, but Stamann pushes him away and lands a knee. Stamann continues to be first to the punch, lacing out the jab. Caraway having success with the uppercut. With 90 seconds left, Caraway gets inside and presses his opponent to the fence. He can’t quite get the takedown. They break, and Stamann defends another shot. Caraway lands a left hand, but Stamann again shakes it off. Caraway relentless but doesn’t get the takedown. MMAjunkie gives the second to Stamann, 10-9.

Round 3 – Quick start on the feet. Caraway inching closer, and they trade low kicks. Low kick for Caraway countered by a right hand from Stamann. Stamann lands a crisp two-punch combination. Stamann with a jab and a low kick. Caraway with a left over the top. His nose is reddened. Caraway wants the takedown, but it’s not there right now. Stamann defending well and punching after he sprawls. Caraway inside and gets the right leg. Stamann complains his opponent is grabbing the glove, but he’s able to defend and reset. Caraway with a left. A right lands, but Stamann counters with two punches. Nice jab for Caraway. Two minutes left. Fight in the balance. Stamann moving well. He lands a low kick. Right hand scores. Caraway shoos again to no avail. Caraway with a nice uppercut. They trade punches in tight. Caraway clearly tiring but moving forward behind punches and trying for the takedown. Stamann countering well as he defends. Punches traded in the clinch. Stamann’s left eye busted up a bit. Final scramble to the floor, and Caraway grabs the neck. He can’t get the guillotine before the bell. This is close. MMAjunkie leans slightly toward Caraway, 10-9, awarding him the fight 29-28.

Mike Pyle vs. Zak Ottow

Round 1 – Pyle light on his feet to open. Ottow with a two-punch combination that misses. Ottow with a spinning kick to the body. Pyle counters with a front kick. Ottow sneaks a left hand through the guard. Ottow holding the center. Pyle moving well, as his corner asks him to be first. Ottow sores with a low kick. Pyle comes back with a sharp jab. Ottow lands a big right over the top, and Pyle hits the deck. Ottow rushes to jump on top. More punches coming in. Pyle covers, but the punches keep coming. Referee Herb Dean watches closely and asks for an answer. Pyle can’t, and Ottow punches away until it’s stopped. An angered Pyle slams the canvas repeatedly, with his final career fight not going his way.

C.B. Dollaway vs. Hector Lombard

Round 1 – Dollaway with a high kick that just misses. Lombard comes back a few low kicks that land. Dollaway trying to stay at distance and fires another high kick that’s blocked. Lombard rushes in and chops the leg again before Dollaway slips out and resets. Dollaway trying to use his length advantage and lands a big kick to the body, slipping the overhand that comes in reply. Jab lands for Dollaway. He kicks the body again. Lombard catches it but can’t quite score the counter. Dollaway shuffling on the outside. Lombard drops his hands and invites him forward. Dollaway knows better. He stays on the outside and fires another high kick. Front kick nearly touches the chin. Lombard with a few power hooks that just miss. Jab for Dollaway, and he slips the counter. Low kick for Lombard. He catches another kick but can’t quite counter. One minute left. Dollaway with a nice jab and the ducks to miss a counter that doesn’t come. Crowd getting a little restless, but Dollaway has to be precise. Another kick to the body. Another comes at the bell. Lombard lands a left hand after the bell, and Dollaway is floored. Referee Mark Smith brings the doctors in to take a look, not letting the corners into the cage. Doctor comes in to look, as well. NSAC executive director Bob Bennett is conferring, too. This fight is over.

John Dodson vs. Pedro Munhoz

Round 1 – Low kick misses from Munhoz. Both men moving well to start. Dodson lands a low kick. Dodson catches a kick but can’t quite sweep his opponent to the floor. Munhoz sticking with the low kicks early. Nice combination from Dodson lands. He catches another kick and nearly scores a takedown. Another two punches from Dodson score. He’s looking quick as ever. Munhoz moving forward, but the speed of Dodson scoring points early. Munhoz high kick blocked. He looks unfazed and continues to press. Another kick is caught, but Munhoz stays upright. Munhoz backs Dodson to the cage and lands two clean punches. Kick to the body caught, and Dodson trips his opponent to the floor, but Munhoz right back to the feet. Low kick for Dodson. Right hand lands. Munhoz the one moving forward, but Dodson is countering very well. Dodson slips a flying knee and lands a left hand. Munhoz pressing, but Dodson’s timing is perfect. MMAjunkie gives the first to Dodson, 10-9.

Round 2 – Dodson with a front kick to start. Munhoz with a combination before another low kick. Dodson in and out of range with quickness. He catches a kick from Munhoz and counters with a nice left hand. Munhoz attacking, but Dodson’s movement is creating angles and allowing him to counter. Munhoz misses a spinning high kick. He lands a knee inside and does score with a right hand as Dodson is trapped against the cage. But Dodson slips out and scores with an uppercut. When Dodson is against the cage, Munhoz is having success, but the action isn’t there often. Two minutes left. Punches traded in the pocket. Munhoz with a left hand that lands. Right hand scores. He’s finding the range with his punches, but he continues to be countered on his kicks. A few right hands land for Dodson. Stick and move for Dodson, over and over. Leaping shot for Dodson. Munhoz lands low as it unfolds. Referee Chris Tognoni a little slow to get in, and Munhoz lands again. After a quick break, almost no time on the restart. MMAjunkie leans again toward Dodson, 10-9.

Round 3 – Quick start for Munhoz. He’s looking to press the action. Dodson happy to exchange. Dodson complains of a low kick in an exchange. Tognoni waits a bit but does finally step in and again warns Munhoz. Quick pace again on the restart. Munhoz is pressing forward, but Dodson continues to move well, slipping out of the pocket and moving back to the center each time. Dodson with a few left hands that score as he retreats. Munhoz is pressing the action, but Dodson slipping, punching and moving to the center, never giving a stationary target. Has to be frustrating for Munhoz. Right hand for Munhoz, but Dodson moves away. Left hand for Dodson, right for Munhoz. Flying knee for Munhoz. He’s trying everything he can. Finally he shoots in for a takedown, as well. He does get the action to the floor with a minute left. Dodson presses the head down and gets to a knee. Munhoz wraps the body and lifts his opponent, slipping around to the back. He knees to the body, but Dodson to his feet. They punch away in the final seconds. MMAjunkie gives the final round to Munhoz, 10-9, but awards the fight to Dodson, 29-28. Will likely come down to that second round.
