UFC 224 play-by-play and live results

RIO DE JANEIRO – MMAjunkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC 224 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:15 p.m. ET (3:15 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, and the main card airs on pay-per-view following preliminary-card bouts on FX and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (15-4 MMA, 8-1 UFC) takes on challenger Raquel Pennington (9-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC). In the co-feature, Kelvin Gastelum (14-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) meets Ronaldo Souza (25-5 MMA, 8-2 UFC) at middleweight.

Markus Perez vs. James Bochnovic

Round 1 – Bochnovic all over Perez early with a body kick and a swarm into the clinch against the cage. Perez wraps the head and Bochnovic takes a spill, allowing him to take the back. Bochnovic trying to keep the other hook from getting in and manages to scramble to his feet. Bochnovic reverses early in the tie-up and grabs a leg. Perez keeps the underhook and works to scoot away. Bochnovic using head control to keep his foeput. Perez wheels around to the back and elevates Bochnovic for a slam. He gets to Bochnovic’s back and works for hooks. Bochnovic rolls for a leg and winds up on his back, with Perez in half-guard. Perez fires off a few rights and tries to advance for an arm-triangle. Bochnovic adjusts and thinks twice about sitting up with a D’Arce setup. He recovers full guard, and Perez stands up and fires down a shot. Perez settles back down and starts attacking with a D’Arce choke, and Bochnovic scrambles to his knees. Perez takes the back and gets in both hooks. Rear-naked choke attempt, and it’s not under the neck. Bochnovic rolls to his side, turning away from the choke. Perez goes for it again, and Bochnovic fights the hands. Perez has it locked, though, and Bochnovic is forced to tap to the rear-naked choke.

Alberto Mina vs. Ramazan Emeev

Round 1 – Emeev closing slowly and blasts the leg of Mina. Emeev cracks Mina with an overhand right and resets. Mina’s counter short. Body kick from Emeev. Leg kick touches off exchange, and Mina indicates he wants a takedown. Emeev pushes him back with a jab and resumes his push. Another exchange, and both fighters take a shot. Mina misses on a spinning elbow and then gets countered on a hip toss. Emeev at his back as he scoots to the cage and grabs an arm for a kimura. Emeev knees the body and slams Mina to the mat. Mina powers up and ends up in a front headlock before escaping. Emeev pushes back in, bobbing his head, and pops Mina with a jab. Leg kick draws right hand counter from Emeev. Body shot from Emeev. Mina looking a little rusty as far as distance and timing. Mina picks a leg and gets the takedown, then goes for a kneebar when Emeev sits up. Mina working for the ankle as Emeev stands overhead. Right hand precedes Emeev down to guard, and Mina rolls for an arm and then a knee. Emeev stands again and defends until Mina gives up. A few shots overhead for Emeev as the frame comes to an end, and MMAjunkie gives him the 10-9 score.

Round 2 – They trade jabs early, and Mina blasts the leg. Feints from both, and Emeev pushes with a jab. Emeev comes out swinging and pushes into the clinch against the cage. Mina tries the hip toss again and Emeev grabs the waist, dragging Mina to the mat. Mina stands up and tries to get free. Emeev misses a trip, and Mina tries to make him pay with knees in the clinch. Emeev keeps underhooks and Mina’s turn is stymied. Audience boos. Mina again tries to free himself, and Emeev obliges with a pair of hooks. Exchange of punches, and Mina’s power punches miss. He goes for a leg in the next trade and misses a spinning backfist. Emeev trips Mina to the mat and lands a big shot overhead. Mina tries for an ankle before Emeev settles into guard and works ground and pound. Mina rolls for a knee and takes a few big right hands. Mina not having much luck stopping Emeev’s punches. With less than one minute to go, Emeev cruising here, holding dominant position. Mina rolls again and gets pushed to the mat as the round ends. MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-9 for Emeev, putting him up 20-18.

Round 3 – Touch of gloves to get started. Emeev presses in and nails the leg as Mina fires off a punch. Mina with jumping front kick, and Emeev pops him with a jab. An overhand right glances, and Mina’s counter short. Mina’s right eye is badly swollen. Emeev lunges with a jab. Mina walks into a straight right, and his one-two counter is short. A body kick is good, though. Mina now getting aggressive, trying to make something happen. Emeev protecting himself well. Big overhand right cracks Mina, who uses a jab to set up a counter right that’s good. Emeev grabs him and walks them to the cage, working knees in the clinch. Looks like Emeev is just holding on. Mina misses the throw again and takes a pair of hooks as he peels off. Spinning back fist from Emeev partially blocked. Mina pressing again with 90 seconds to go. Emeev won’t stay in front of him long enough. Kicks are telegraphed. Mina short on a one-two and Emeev lands a straight right. Mina moves forward and fires off punches, but Emeev ducks out of the way. Mina lands a left hand and takes it as his cue to storm. Emeev turns out to be OK. Rolling thunder kick from Mina, and of course it whiffs. Spinning back kick from Emeev good, and he plasters Mina with a right as Mina storms forward in one last dash. MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-9 Emeev, and it’s a 30-27 shutout.

Thales Leites vs. Jack Hermansson

Round 1 – Hermansson bounces out and pops Leites with kicks. Leites fires back with his own kicks, but Hermansson just relentless in pace. Hermansson swinging for the fences with kicks and punches, but so far, Leites missing tghe worst of it. Nice jab from Hermansson, and Leites grabs a leg and walks them to the cage. Just one minute in, and Leites has the leg trapped between his legs. Hermansson pops him with an elbow, and Leites drops for the takedown. A leg scoop briefly puts Hermansson on his knees, but he gets up. Leites at his back, still working for the sweep, and then drags Hermansson to the mat. Hermansson seated against the cage, and Leites gets tossed over Hermansson’s shoulders with a throw. Leites now working to get up, and Hermansson blasts him with knees as he does. Leites tries a trip and gets countered to meet the canvas with his back. Leites works for a sweep and then powers into a takedown attempt. Hermansson keeps his feet as Leites again tries to drag him down. Hermansson turns and uses a whizzer to defend another takedown. Leites again tries to sweep the leg with 45 seconds left. Whizzer helps Hermansson throw Leites to the mat, and Hermansson settles into guard. Shots from overhead as Leites looks for a submission. He runs out of time as Hermansson counters with punches. MMAjunkie scores the first frame 10-9 for Hermansson.

Round 2 – Hermansson leads with a jab and closes in, darwing a right overhand from Leites. Right hand counter prompts Leites to shoot, and Hermansson winces as Leites completes the move. Leites now almost mounted, and Hermansson winces again. Leites advances, and Hermansson screams out in pain. Goddard checks in on him. Unsympathetic crowd chants, “You’re gonna die.” Hermansson tries to reverse, and Leites transitions to an arm-triangle. Just a matter of time now. Hermansson gets mounted as Leites adjusts the hold. Hermansson grabs his arm and tries to defend. Leites adjusts to secure the arm-triangle, and there’s half the round left. Leites doesn’t like it, and Hermansson survives certain submission. From half-guard, Leites works elbows. It looks like Hermansson is going to survive, but there’s still 75 seconds left. Hermansson turns his body to create space, and Leites pops him with a punch. As Leites advances, Hermansson grimaces again. Leites takes knee on belly and then advances to mount, and Hermansson tries to sit up. Leites goes to work with elbows, but runs out of time, and Hermansson survives. MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-8 for Leites, and it’s 19-18 for Leites.

Round 3 – Hermansson leaps for a knee to start the frame, and then goes for a guillotine when Leites absorbs it. Position isn’t there, and yet Hermansson holds onto the neck for dear life. He can’t get it, and Leites escapes and wraps Hermansson’s head before rolling for an anaconda choke. Hermansson is walking his legs away from it, taking the pressure off, and Hermansson pitches himself forward to escape. Hermansson now on top and manages to advance to mount, resisting a scramble to pepper Leites with punches. Leites turns away and takes a flurry of punches. Goddard is right there, and Leites suddenly flounders as Hermansson pours on the punishment. Goddard steps in, and Hermansson pulls off an amazing comeback.

Warlley Alves vs. Sultan Aliev

Round 1 – Aliev leads with a jab and gets popped with a leg kick. Low stances from both. Bobbing and weaving, standing directly across from each other. Aliev with a few pot shots. Alves with body kick and he presses forward. Right hand and body kick counter good for Alves. Aliev presses him back with a jab. Alves with a pair of kicks that push Aliev back, and Aliev drops for a takedown. He’s got double underhooks, but Alves holds firm and reverses against the cage. Knees to the body against the cage for Alves. Aliev fires back with the same. Now, Aliev is the one being smothered. More than half of the round gone. Alves tries an elbow and it’s blocked. Knees to the body still good. Nice elbow from Alves, and a brief firefight as he disengages. Leg kick almost sweeps Aliev, and he pushes back with a pair of hooks. Big overhand right staggers Aliev, and he grabs the clinch before peeling off and landing a pair of hooks. Crowd very appreciative of Alves, who lands a leg kick and pushes to the cage. Aliev traps him with underhooks against the cage and smothers him. Aliev throws Alves in the final seconds of the frame. MMAjunkie scores the opening frame 10-9 for Alves.

Round 2 – Same start for the frame, with both taking low stances and squaring off. Alvres flurries with a combo, but they all miss as Aliev packpedals. Popping jab from Aliev. Shuffle steps for Alves as he tries to gets inside. He leaps for a knee and gets tied up in the clinch. Knees to the body as Aliev smothers him. Alves turns against the cage and Aliev peels off. Pummel gives Alves the underhook and he drives to the cage. Short shots from both. Maia warns for action. Alves lands a knee to the head. Aliev’s right eye is swelling badly. He turns Alves against the cage, and the two again trade position. Knees in close with less than two minutes left. Another trade of position, and Aliev nearly gets to the back and Alves scrambles and thinks about a guillotine. Back to the clinch, and Maia separates them. Alves explodes with a body kick, and Aliev lands a right in the next exchange. Popping jab for Aliev, who’s right eye is almost shut. Left hook for Aliev. Alves lands a hook and kick in an exchange. MMAjunkie scores the second frame 10-9 for Alves, who’s now up 20-18. In between rounds, the cageside doctor looks at Aliev’s shut eye and calls off the fight.

Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos vs. Sean Strickland

Round 1 – Santos tries to push back Strickland with a leg kick and head kick. Strickland still pressing. They trade leg kicks. Santos wings a two-piece as Strickland advances, and he’s a bit short, but it pushes the American back. Santos charges with a flurry, but he’s off the mark. Strickland waiting patiently for the counter with his left hand, jabbing and firing off a left hook. Santos gets out of the way and fires off a head kick. Strickland intercepting Santos’ punches at range, but he has yet to land anything significant. A caught kick allows him to land a punch counter. Santos shoots in the open and is picked off. Jab is Strickland’s best weapon so far. Head kick from Santos short. Strickland’s reach is really benefitting him in punching exchanges. When Santos winds up and fires back, he’s gone. Out of nowhere, Santos fires off a wheel kick and cracks Strickland in the back of the head. Strickland pitches forward to the canvas, and Santos pounces. As he fires off hammerfists, Strickland goes limp, and Portella steps in to stop it. Strickland briefly shoots on the referee before realizing what’s happened. Impressive finish.

Davi Ramos vs. Nick Hein

Round 1 – Ramos hints at a kick, but thinks twice. Hein feinting. Low kick cracks him. Hein ducks on a Ramos punch and misses on the counter. Hein cracks Ramos with a punch off a leg kick, and Ramos drops to the mat, inviting him in. Hein says no way, and blocks a head kick when Ramos gets back to his feet. Nice right hand from Ramos, and Hein misses on the counter. Ramos fakes a combo and shoots in for an easy takedown. In half-guard he instantly works to advance as the audience chants. Hein tries to tie up the body and locks down Ramos’ leg. Ramos grabs an arm and hints at a kimura. He steps his legs over instead, catching Hein by surprise as he takes the back. Hein pitches forward to get free, but Ramos locks up the body triangle. Ramos gives up the arms and softens up Hein with some hammerfists. Now, he goes back to the choke position with one minute left to go. Squeeze on Hein’s jaw is enough to coax the tap, and there’s another submission for Ramos.
