LAS VEGAS – MMAjunkie is on scene and will be reporting live from Saturday’s UFC 229 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0 MMA, 10-0 UFC) takes on former featherweight and lightweight champ Conor McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC). In the co-feature, former interim lightweight champ Tony Ferguson (23-3 MMA, 13-1 UFC) meets ex-champ Anthony Pettis (21-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC).

Current Fight

Derrick Lewis vs. Alexander Volkov

Round 1 – It’s a feeling out process to begin the fight, but Volkov strikes first with the jab. Lewis throws a haymaker, but he only hits air. Lewis throws a jumping switch kick and volkov comes forward with a head kick and a jab. He follows up with a short punch and Lewis is hurt! Lewis is backing up and Volkov is trying to swarm him. Volkov lands a right hand and Lewis is in trouble again. Lewis tries to clinch and appears to have been poked in the eye because he keeps touching his face. Lewis turns around and the referee recognizes he’s been poked. There’s a brief break in the action, but the fight resumes. Lewis is struggling to fight any range with his strikes and Volkov is controlling the pace with his jab. Lewis slips to the ground and now Volkov is on top. He gets up quickly, though and the striking exchanges resume. Lewis lands a powershot that causes Volkov to go for a takedown. Volkov advances to side control and Lewis gives up his back. Lewis is able to reverse position and now he’s the one on top. He postures up and lands some ground-and-pound. He then stands up and is overtop Volkov to close the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Volkov, though.

Round 2 – Volkov lands a hard uppercut in the opening stages of the round that backs Lewis up. Lewis fires back then fakes a takedown. Lewis is definitely frustrated with the range and Volkov is pressing forward and working his jab, which has been a very effective weapon for him in the bout. Volkov gets more jabs and a right hand through Lewis’ guard before going for a takedown. Lewis stops it, though, and is back in open space. Lewis just misses with a bomb of a punch. The action slows way down, though, with Lewis doing very little and Volkov simply working around his jab, which is controlling the entire pace of the fight. Lewis is only pushing out his offense in small sports as he tries to figure out Volkov’s timing. Lewis shoots for another takedown, but it’s not even close. Volkov throws a head kick that just misses and Lewis comes back with a bit shot. Volkov loses his mouthguard and the referee breaks the action just before the end of the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Volkov.

Ryan LaFlare vs. Tony Martin

Round 1 – Both fighters pawing with lead hands. Front kick and superman punch combo from LaFlare breaks the tension. Already, LaFlare the more active fighter, while Martin seems to be waiting for the counter. Lead leg attacks from LaFlare, and one inside kick goes south of the border. We pause. Martin closes and starts to get his hands moving. A low kick sweeps LaFlare off his feet briefly. Martin trying to land his straight right and not having much luck. They punch into the clinch, and Martin walks LaFlare back to the fence. He blocks escape, but decides to back off. Nice counter right off kick from LaFlare. Martin circles around and puts his hands on LaFlare as he closes distance. Undeterred, LaFlare continues to attack by setting up punches with low kicks. Martin knocks LaFlare to the ground with a punch, but he quickly recovers. One minute to go, and Martin is waiting again to catch LaFlare coming in. Looks like another kick went south, but Martin sucks it up. LaFlare powers into a body kick and punch before a takedown attempt. Fence stops him, and Martin elbows the head. They end the frame in the clinch, and MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-9 for Martin.

Round 2 – Lots of feints from LaFlare as he closes in slowly. More pawing of lead hands. LaFlare continues to attack the lead leg and misses on a superman. Martin times a couinter and drops LaFlare with a right hand. Martin leaps in and goes to work with punches overhead. LaFlare trying to keep distance with his legs, but Martin gets past and settles into half-guard. Bad cut on LaFlare’s forehead. Martin postures up, and LaFlare recovers guard briefly. Martin grabs an arm for a kimura, and LaFlare quickly adjusts. Pass attempt from Martin, and LaFlare gives up his back in transition. Martin working for hooks, and LaFlare turns to his back to recover butterfly guard. Martin again with a pass attempt, and as LaFlare pitches forward, he sets up for D’Arce. Martin needs a good squeeze, but the position isn’t quite there. LaFlare stays calm and then explodes out, rolling to his feet. Less than one minute to work, and he goes back to his kicks. Martin again with a right hand that cracks his foe. Round ends with LaFlare in pursuit, and MMAjunkie scores the frame 10-9 for Martin, putting him up 20-18.

Round 3 – LaFlare needs to get busy, and his pursuit of Martin early indicates he knows where he’s at. Martin still countering with punches, but they’re coming a little slower. Still fast enough to crack LaFlare off a leg kick that briefly swept him. Martin out of nowhere fires off a right head kick that nails LaFlare, sending him to the mat. Follow-up punches follow, but they’re not needed. Stunning finish to lead off the card for Martin.

Gray Maynard vs. Nik Lentz

Round 1 – A feeling out stage opens the round before Maynard launching the first attack with a big right hand. Lentz answers with some clean shots, though, and Maynard is staggered and hurt. Lentz adjusts for a takedown on the fence and forces Maynard into a crouched position. He’s trying to sweep the foot to take Maynard down, and eventually does. Lentz is landing some good shots, but Maynard is keeping composed and finally frees himself as Lentz misses with a knee. Maynard throws a kick that’s caught and Lentz fires more shots, hurting Maynard again. They grapple and Lentz goes for a guillotine choke. He can’t finish it, but manages to get top position on Maynard and is opening up with some punches and elbows. Maynard is taking a good amount of damage but is covering up and keeping himself in the fight. He takes a knee of the side of the head from the clinch to the close the round. MMAjunkie scores the round an easy 10-9 for Lentz.

Round 2 – Maynard puts on pressure to open the round, but walks right into Lentz’s extended finger and the action is halted due to the eye poke. He’s given some time to recover before a restart in the action. The fight settles into a boxing match and both men are tagging each other with some hard, clean shots. Lentz comes up high with a head kick that drops Maynard and the fight is over! Big finish for “The Carny.”

Lina Lansberg vs. Yana Kunitskaya

Round 1 – Kunitskaya comes out throwing numerous leg kicks, most of which only hit air. Lansberg clinches up with Kunitskaya, who seems stronger in the position and is able to score with a hip toss. Kunitskaya lands in half guard where she begins to put in work. Lansberg is able to recover the guard and is trying to hold on to Kunitskaya and thwart her advances on the mat. Lansberg scoots her way toward the fence and gets into a couching position as she attempts to stand up. She eventually does, but Kunitskaya still has her trapped against the fence. She doesn’t stay there for long, though, because Kunitskaya drags the fight back to the ground and the time she’s in side control. Kunitskaya opens up with some punches and elbows but Lansberg is able to protect herself long enough to avoid major damage and last the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Kunitskaya.

Round 2 – Lansberg comes out more aggressive on the feet to begin the second frame, but Kunitskaya is stalking her because she wants to grapple. She eventually succeeds in clinching up with Lansberg against the fence and is connecting with some knees to he body as she attempts to score another takedown. The referee isn’t seeing enough action, though, and separates the fighters. That gives Lansberg another opportunity to generate offense, and she stings Kunitskaya with a nice right hand. Kunitskaya is unaffected by it and she continues to move forward and reestablishes control of the fight from the clinch. The strength is just too much for Lansberg to overcome at the moment and she can’t do anything to keep her opponent at bay. Kunitskaya is trying for a takedown. She partially gets after turning the corner on the single leg against the fence, but Lansberg is able to stay on her knees and avoid getting put flat on her back to the close out the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Kunitskaya.

Round 3 – Lansberg is determined to make something happen in the final five minutes of the round and she’s pressing forward. Kunitskaya knows she’s well ahead, though, and is keeping her distance as to not take any major risks. She waits for Lansberg to get overaggressive and locks up the clinch once more agains the cage. The majority of the fight has been spent in this position, and Kunitskaya get another takedown from it. She can’t do much with this one and Lansberg quickly finds her way back to a standing position. The crowd isn’t loving the fight, because Kunitskaya’s game plan is seemingly revolved completely against takedowns form the fence. The referee breaks up the clinch against the cage and now both fighters are throwing some strikes with some head behind them. Kunitskaya catches one of Lansberg’s body kick attempts and gets a final takedown in the center of the octagon to close out the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Kunitskaya and she should take an easy decision victory.

Scott Holtzman vs. Alan Patrick

Round 1 – Patrick comes out within big kicks, but he’s forced to give some respect after eating a clean punch from Holtzman. He launches a spinning back kick to Holtzman’s body, but there’s not a ton on it. Patrick is coming forward looking for a kill-shot and Holtzman is doing his best to find his timing and land a big counter-blow. Patrick is mixing up his offense with kicks and punches while Holtzman is sticking mostly with punches and low kicks. He surprises Patrick with a head kick that just barely grazes the Brazilian. They trade more strikes before Holtzman initiates the first grappling sequence of the fight by clinching against the fence. Nothing happens there, though, and they return into open space. Patrick misses on another spinning kick then slips off a punch attempt. Holtzman is now on top in half guard and is trying to do some work. He doesn’t have much time, though, and the round expires. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Holtzman.

Round 2 – Patrick is throwing wild techniques to begin the round and is starting to get somewhat sloppy and careless. He walks into a hard counter right hand from Holtzman that forces him to shoot for a takedown. Holtzman stuffs it, though, and is clearly gaining in confidence. Patrick tries to shut that down by throwing combinations of punches, but Holtzman is avoiding most of what’s being thrown at him. Holtzman decides to change things up and goes for a takedown of his own near the fence. He’s able to connect his hands under Patrick’s legs and scoop him down to the canvas. Patrick tries to scramble for a leg lock, but Holtzman wisely steps over the body and gets out before returning to full guard. Holtzman lands a pair of nasty elbows to Patrick’s forehead and that causes Patrick to try to scramble back up to his feet. Patrick looks to be the more fatigued at this point but he’s still throwing with bad intentions. Holtzman lands another hard right hook, but Patrick is taking all the power shots very well. Holtzman clinches up against the fence again, but he doesn’t do much other than land an elbow on the break. Patrick goes for another takedown in the final 20 seconds, but Holtzman doesn’t allow it before time expires. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Holtzman.

Round 3 – Patrick his looking to turn the tide in the final round, but he is struggling to find his range and land a fight-altering blow on Holtzman, who is putting on solid pressure with his boxing. He lands a slick counter right hook, followed by another one moments later that drops Patrick. Holtzman jumps on top and is hunting for the finish! He lands some ground-and-pound before moving to full mount, and Patrick is in big trouble. Holtzman postures up and lands some elbows, but Patrick is able to squirm free and recover his guard. Holtzman is being patient and persistent, but at this point Patrick appears to have his wits back. Holtzman doesn’t stop, though, and regains a dominant mount position once more where he lands a flurry of vicious elbows from mount that Patrick out cold. Nasty knockout for Holtzman.

Aspen Ladd vs. Tonya Evinger

Round 1 – Ladd lands a pair of right hands right off the bat. Evinger swings back and lands a cross of her own. They clinch up and Evinger pushes her opponent against the fence. She’s just holding at the moment as Ladd tries to free herself from the position. She’s able to reverse Evinger against the fence then a scramble happens that ends up with Ladd on top. She cracks Evinger with some good punches before taking the back. Ladd opens up and is landing a ton of shots on her opponent and Evinger is trapped with no way out. The referee has seen enough and waves it off, giving Ladd the TKO victory.

Vicente Luque vs. Jalin Turner

Round 1 – Both men are cautious throughout the first minute of the fight, throwing very little at each other. Luque throws a pair of kicks to the legs, but they don’t have much steam on them. Luque is the first to land hard, tagging Turner with a right hand over the top. Turner is circling and backing up while trying to use his lengthy to pepper Luque with the jab. Luque is working to get inside the range and is throwing leg kicks consistently. Turned lands a stepping knee to Luque’s body, but that doesn’t prevent Luque from moving forward and applying pressure. Luque’s counter left hand is an effective weapon so far. Turner connects with a spinning kick to the body then launches into the air with a flying knee that falls just short. The debuting Turner is looking more comfortable, but he walks into a massive shot off a spinning technique that drops him to the canvas. Luque pounces on his downed foe and lands a flurry that puts Turner out cold. He’s down for a while after the finish, but eventually gets up to his feet a few minutes later. Nasty work by Luque.

Jussier Formiga vs. Sergio Pettis

Round 1 – It’s a tentative start to the fight from both. Nothing happened for several minutes as neither are willing to sit down on the strikes and throw something heavy. Pettis is circling away and working around his jab and mixing in the occasional leg kick. Formiga finally shoots for a takedown and he’s able to put Pettis down, but only for a second. Pettis successfully scrambles up to his feet and reengages with the striking, but that only gives Formiga another opportunity to shoot for the takedown. He puts Pettis down again, but this time he’s able to keep him there. Formiga settles in from inside Pettis’ guard and Pettis is trying to either scramble or work his way into a submission. He can’t accomplish anything, though, and Formiga rides out the remainder of the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Formiga.

Round 2 – The second round begins the same way as the first, and that’s with little to no action. The crowd is beginning to boo and Formiga steps in with an uppercut that falls just shy of its target. Formiga shoots for a takedown but he can’t get in deep enough on the hips and Pettis is able to resist and break free. Pettis seems reluctant to do anything more than the jab, likely out of fear of the takedown. He finally throws a kick, and Formiga makes him pay because the Brazilian catches it and turned it into a takedown. Formiga is once again inside Pettis’ guard, but only has about 90 seconds left to work. He postures up with some short elbows and punches, but he can’t land much in the way of damage. He advances to hold guard and is setting up an arm-triangle choke, but he comes nowhere close to locking it in. Pettis gets his guard back and scrambles free up to his feet just before the end of the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Formiga.

Round 3 – Pettis comes out throwing the jab again, but this time he is trying to work behind it. He follows up with uppercuts and a head kick attempt, but sensing his aggression, Formiga shoots for another takedown. Pettis denies the initial entry, but Formiga quickly hops over to the back. Formiga has a body triangle on Pettis from a standing position against the fence, but Pettis is not panicking as his opponent is trying to set up a rear-naked choke. Formiga is also patient, though, and is trying to find a sneaky way to get his forearm under the neck. He throws some short strikes at Pettis to have him open up, but Pettis is not giving the opportunity to be submitted. Formiga is controlling the round and the fight, though, spending several minutes on the back. He keeps the position for the rest of the round and just like that, the clock runs out. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Formiga and he should take a decision.

Michelle Waterson vs. Felice Herrig

Round 1 – Herrig comes out aggressive with her hands but Waterson is able to evade. She steps back and lands a right hand kick, but it doesn’t have much on it and Herrig continues to pressure. Waterson appears keen on keeping the distance and working kicks, including a side kick to the body. Herrig lands a right hand over the top but is having a tough time finding her range on a mobile Waterson. Waterson lands a solid counter punch followed by a low kick and Herrig answers with a pair of straight right hands. She tags Waterson with another punch coming in and opts to clinch up against the fence. Herrig lands a knee to the body from in close and is using her strength and size advantage to keep Waterson pinned against the fence. Waterson is trying hard to turn Herrig around or break free, but can’t do so before the end of the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Waterson.

Round 2 – Herrig swings a big combination that falls just shy to open the round. She tries to clinch again, but Waterson stops it before she can be controlled. Waterson fakes a takedown, but that puts her right into range to be grabbed by Herrig. She clinches with Waterson and lands some solid strikes from in close range. In the midst of a scramble Waterson is able to score a nice takedown off a failed Herrig hip toss that changes the momentum of the round. Waterson connects with a series of left elbows as she pins Herrig against the mat from half guard. Waterson is landing strikes but is struggling to advance Herrig recovers full guard, but she can’t do much else of her back at this stage. She tries to kick Waterson off her, but Waterson is heavy on top. She avoids a late armbar attempt from Herrig before the end of the round. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Waterson.

Round 3 – Herrig wastes no time forcing Waterson back into the clinch. She has her pressed up against the fence less than 20 seconds in, but she’s not as strong as the beginning of the fight and can’t keep her there. Herrig gets hands on Waterson again and this time is successful with the hip toss. She ends up in top position in Waterson’s guard. Waterson fires off some nasty elbows from bottom and tries to throw her legs up for a submission. Herrig is essentially just holding on and Waterson is doing really good work from bottom. Waterson tries to scramble, but Herrig isn’t allowing her any space to work. The referee intervenes and stands the fighters up. Waterson immediately shoots for a takedown but it is stuffed rather easily by Herrig. The fight returns to the clinch against the fence and Herrig tries the hip toss takedown one more. It doesn’t work this time, though, and she exits the clinch. She lands a nice left hook on Waterson, who is trying to counter punch. She connects with another head kick, but once again Herrig eats it. Both woman are throwing from close range the final 30 seconds. Herrig tries to cling again before the end of the round but can’t get ahold of Waterson. MMAjunkie scores the round 10-9 for Waterson. She wins 30-27 on our scorecard.
