UFC 230 play-by-play and live results

NEW YORK – MMAjunkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC 230 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier (21-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) puts his title on the line against challenger Derrick Lewis (21-5 MMA, 12-3 UFC), who is just a month removed from a come-from-behind knockout win over Alexander Volkov. In the co-feature, former middleweight champion Chris Weidman (14-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) takes on Ronaldo Souza (25-6 MMA, 8-3 UFC).

Current fight

Karl Roberson vs. Jack Marshman

Round 1 – Roberson takes the center and pops a hard kick to the arms. Marshman moving to his left and looking to load up on punches. Roberson slips a big shot and moves into the clinch. Nothing there. He lands an uppercut as they break. Roberson lands a crisp left to the chin. Marshman just a step behind right now. Roberson kicks the leg. Roberson patient on the outside. He kicks the body and then slips several of Marshman’s punches. Roberson is just the quicker man. Marshman tough as nails though, and he’s mixing things up and firing back, even after being rocked. Roberson kicks the legs and slips the counter. Marshman finding a way to get inside, and he touches the body. Still, round ends on the feet, and MMAjunkie gives it to Roberson, 10-9.

Round 2 – Roberson still patient as he attacks. He lands a big left hand. Marshman is unquestionably tough, shaking it off and moving forward. Roberson high kick blocked. Straight left lands clean. Roberson is landing clean, but Marshman seems somehow unaffected. A cut does open on the left cheek. Marshman swinging back, but Roberson slipping and attacking. Roberson changes levels and drives through with a slamming takedown. Roberson in side control. Marshman trying to hook the leg, and find his way up, but he’s trapped right now. Roberson’s pace has slowed, and he’s basically just controlling and holding from the top. He finishes there, and MMAjunkie gives it to Roberson, 10-9.

Results

Adam Wieczorek vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima

Round 1 – It’s de Lima to the center to start, firing a few big punches and looking to kick the legs. Wieczorek moving laterally on the outside, wary of his opponent’s power. Wieczorek senses an opportunity to move inside, driving forward and pushing the action to the canvas, falling in his opponent’s half-guard. Wieczorek works on isolating the left arm, but it’s not there. As he seeks opportunities, de Lima counters with a sweep, turning and moving into top position for the first time. Wieczorek active from his back, turning side to side and looking for options. Meanwhile, de Lima not doing a lot from the top but certainly maintaining a dominant position. Referee Dan Miragliotta calls for action. One minute left. Finally, a few punches from de Lima, but it seems he’s more content to simply hold the better spot. A few more punches do come in the final seconds, and it’s de Lima’s best offense of the round. MMAjunkie gives it to de Lima, 10-9.

Round 2 – Wieczorek again moving laterally on the outside. More aggression from de Lima, throwing hands early. A clinch initiated from de Lima, and he looks for the trip takedown, but Wieczorek able to battle and stay upright before pulling away. Wieczorek shifting side to side, and de Lima catches him with a low kick. Another lands clean. Big right from de Lima misses, and Wieczorek able to grab hold and push the action to the cage. Miragliotta again calls for action, with the clinch a bit of a stalemate. They briefly turn, and Wieczorek backs away. Slapping low kick to the thigh for de Lima. He throws a right and then again moves into the clinch. It would seem de Lima could potentially finish on the feet, but he wants the clinch. Miragliotta breaks them apart and calls for more action. Busier on the feet for de Lima, and he’s landing with punches up top and kicks to the legs. Wieczorek looks tired. He works to the clinch, but there’s no offense. A flurry from de Lima to close the round, and MMAjunkie gives him the round, 10-9.

Round 3 – Wieczorek desperate to get inside, and de Lima obliges. With the body wrapped, de Lima is able to muscle Wieczorek to the floor, setting up immediately in side control. Wieczorek lands a few knees to the body, but de Lima counters with a slick transition to mount. Wieczorek tries to hit the sweep, but de Lima backs away and resets on the feet. On the restart, de Lima looks to throw strikes, and Wieczorek falls back to the canvas. Seemed a pretty willing fall. Wieczorek looking for options from his back, but de Lima is heavy on top. Not a ton of action, and Miragliotta calls for a restart with 90 seconds left. Quick standup there. Wieczorek going to need a miracle, but de Lima is able to move inside, wrap the body and trip his opponent to the floor once again. Setting up inside his opponent’s guard, de Lima is going to ride this out until the end. A few punches come through, but not many. Bell sounds, and MMAjunkie gives the round to de Lima, 10-9, and awards him the fight 30-27.

Shane Burgos vs. Kurt Holobaugh

Round 1 – Holobaugh chops at the legs several times right at the start. Burgos doing his best to check them, but Holobaugh is very quick and aggressive to open. Burgos now looking to counter over those kicks, as well, but they keep chopping at the leg. Holobaugh landing some punches up top in the early going, as well. Burgos is firing back with a crisp jab, as well. Quick pace to start, for sure. Big flurry lands clean, and Burgos hits the floor after a left to the chin. Holobaugh rushes to the floor to try and finish the job. Burgos smiled as he hit the deck and seems to be recovered well enough. He instantly turns for the armbar, and it’s in tight. Fantastic counter. He sits back and breaks his opponent’s grip, forcing the tap. Incredible work.

Matt Frevola vs. Lando Vannata

Round 1 – Vannata loose and calm to start, while Frevola a bit more frantic in his movements. Vannata misses a spinning high kick, and Frevola fires right back with a high kick that partially lands and a few low kicks, as well. Frevola keeping the pressure high. Vannata comes back with a high kick that lands clean and sends Frevola crashing to the floor. Somehow, he instantly recovers and starts swinging back with punches before shooting inside. Vannata defends well, and we get a brief timeout for Frevola to replace his mouthpiece. Pace settles a bit on the restart. Frevola has recovered well and is throwing with power and finding the mark. Vannata still moving around, seeking angles. Frevola with a spinning heel kick that touches the chin. Right hand sees Vannata stagger. Vannata recovers and thinks takedown, but it’s not there. Frevola has found his range late, and he’s teeing off. Vannata wants a takedown, but Frevola counters and grabs the guillotine. It’s tight, but Vannata sneaks his head out. Crazy finish to the round. MMAjunkie leans to Frevola after the rough start, 10-9.

Round 2 – Vannata with a spinning kick to the body. Frevola answers by chopping the legs. Vannata with a front kick to the face. He’s attacking all levels with the kicks. A Vannata right hand drops Frevola. Somehow he battles back to his feet. Vannata knows his opponent is hurt. He’s trying to pick his shots. Big punches to the body. Frevola desperate and shoots inside. Vannata sprawls wells and circles away. Another right hand lands clean. Vannata being patient with a wounded foe. Frevola smartly trying to keep space and recover. He’s still a little wobbly, and the fatigue is apparent. Frevola’s face is battered and bleeding, but he seems to have recovered now. Less than two minutes remain. Frevola now throwing punches with full power again. Vannata holding the center and picking his shots. Frevola shoots inside, but Vannata easily sprawls and returns to his feet. Vannata looks for the guillotine in the final seconds. He runs out of time before the finish, and MMAjunkie gives it to Vannata, 10-9.

Round 3 – Fight likely hangs in the balance. Frevola looks fresh enough, and he’s busy to start the round. Vannata still patient, measuring distance and looking for opportunities. Vannata catches a kick, but Frevola tags him with four punches that look painful. Vannata doesn’t care and sticks with the takedown, but he can’t keep the fight there. Three minutes remain. Frevola the busier man, while Vannata seems to be waiting for the perfect shot. Vannata controlling the center. He digs the body and punches up top, as well. Vannata starting to let it go a little more late in the frame. Frevola with a well-timed takedown, but Vannata rolls and scrambles immediately back to his feet. Less than a minute. Fight is still very tight. Frevola lands a big right hand. Fight ends on the feet. Close. MMAjunkie leans toward Frevola, 10-9, in the final round, awarding him the fight 29-28.

Lyman Good vs. Ben Saunders

Round 1 – Good chops the legs to start. Saunders moving a bit, but staying at range against a powerful foe. Saunders kicks the body. They move into a Thai clinch, and Saunders lands a few big knees. However, Good is landing with uppercuts inside, as well. Good keeps punching, and he touches the chin. Saunders collapses to the canvas. Good falls with hammerfists, and this fight is over. Brutal work in tight.

Julio Arce vs. Sheymon Moraes

Round 1 – Patient start for both. Both men study in the early going. Arce unleashes a flurry, but it’s blocked. A Moraes right hand drops his opponent. Moraes rushed down to the floor to try and finish things. Arce seems to have recovered, and he’s doing well to scramble on his back. Moraes postures and dives down with a right. Arce latches in a reverse triangle from his back, but Moraes pulls free rather easily. They scramble up and start to work from the clinch. Arce has the body wrapped and trips his foe, but Moraes gets immediately back to his feet. Moraes showing good balance against the cage, but Arce is creating options. Incredibly, he jumps off the cage to backmount. Smooth move. Moraes battling the hands. He’s doing a good job, and he pulls the arm off to the side. Arce grabs it back and has a solid attempt right at the bell, but it sounds before he finishes. MMAjunkie gives the first to Arce, 10-9.

Round 2 – Moraes looking to strike and lands a clean right hand. Still, Arce drives forward and wraps the body and drags the action to the canvas. Moraes stands immediately back to his feet. He lands a big elbow inside, and Arce is cut badly. Blood is pouring out of his head and covering both men. They finally break away, and referee Yves Lavigne doesn’t intervene. Blood all over both men as they reset in the center. Arce smiles a bit. The blood is out of his eyes and just rushing down the side of the face. Moraes the bigger man, and it’s obvious his strikes are more powerful, but they’re trading on the feet. Blood continues to just pour down and cover both men and splatter all over the canvas. Moraes lands a clean right, and it drops Arce. Moraes back on top now and looking to strike. Arce using his legs to try and create space. Moraes decides to back away with 30 seconds left. They finish on the feet, and the cutmen go to work on Arce. MMAjunkie gives the round to Moraes, 10-9.

Round 3 – Blood still streaming down Arce’s torso. Just no way to make it stop. Still, he seems to be feeling fine as he moves out. Moraes is patient on the outside. Big kick is blocked. Arce lands a nice kick to the body. Arce is moving well, but he’s cautious of his opponent’s power. Arce moves inside but can’t quite hold the clinch and eats an elbow as Moraes pulls away. Moraes head kick lands partially, as well. Moraes catches a kick and returns with a kick to his opponent’s body. Moraes is holding the center, but Arce isn’t out of this. Arce lands a right hand. One minute left. Arce is the busier man to close. Still, MMAjunkie leans slightly toward Moraes, 10-9, giving him the fight 29-28.

Sijara Eubanks vs. Roxanne Modafferi

Round 1 – Modafferi paws a jab to feel range. Eubanks lands a hard low kick to the legs. Eubanks pumping a quick jab, as well. Eubanks sneaks in a right hand. Modafferi moving in typical fashion, a little choppy on the outside. Eubanks smoother in the center. Eubanks drops down and grabs a single-leg, pushing Modafferi to her back with relative ease. Modafferi works to guard, looking for options right away. Eubanks stacked heavy on top. She grabs the neck to help break the guard, then postures up. She’s still unable to pass the guard. Modafferi keeping control of the head underneath and lands a few short elbows. Eubanks backs away but quickly pushes back down. Modafferi tries to scramble up, but Eubanks is quick to drive her back down. Eubanks with several hammerfists from the top. She again stands and tries to move past the legs but can’t. She finishes there. MMAjunkie gives the first to Eubanks, 10-9.

Round 2 – Modafferi darting in and out, landing a few strikes along the way. Eubanks firing back and landing the more powerful blows. High kick wobbles Modafferi. Eubanks sees it and pushes forward, and punches send her opponent to the floor. Eubanks follows but gets tied up in her opponent’s guard and elects to back away. Modafferi still looks a little wobbly, but Eubanks also looks tired, as well. Modafferi pushes inside and holds the clinch against the cage. Hip toss from Modafferi. Very slick. Little less than two minutes, and Modafferi is on top. It’s a very high half-guard. She’s trying to free her right leg, but Eubanks recovers well. Eubanks rolls for a kimura while Modafferi tries to pass. Modafferi keeps her hand in tight. Eubanks lets the kimura go, and she tries to recover position, but Modafferi stays on top until the end. Still MMAjunkie gives Eubanks the second, 10-9.

Round 3 – Modafferi pressing, but Eubanks does seem to have a little more energy right now. She’s popping out a jab and firing a right hand behind it. Modafferi pushing forward with punches and does touch the chin a bit. Modafferi changes levels, but Eubanks pushes her away with relative ease. Modafferi keeping the pace high. She’s trying to pressure. Eubanks dealing with it well and landing big punches on the counter. Modafferi wants the clinch, but Eubanks wraps the body and uses a trip to get her own takedown. She lands in Modafferi half-guard. Modafferi works her way to guard and looks for options. She gets the legs high, but Eubanks is able to push it away. Modafferi has to turn to her knees to try and make something happen. She gets to her feet, but Eubanks is in control. Modafferi trying to scramble and makes something happen, but Eubanks in control. MMAjunkie gives the round to Eubanks, 10-9, and awards her the fight 30-27.

Jason Knight vs. Jordan Rinaldi

Round 1 – Knight wastes no time moving forward, firing strikes. Rinaldi counters with a nice left hand to the chin. High kick lands just over the top. Knight shakes it off and pushes forward, and Rinaldi changes levels and brings the action to the canvas. Knight recovers guard very quickly and looks to work from his back. Butterfly hooks in briefly. He tries to kick up for the armbar, but it’s not there. Knight crawls up to his feet. Knight throws a few elbows but gets warned by referee Dan Miragliotta. Rinaldi uses the brief pause and drives through for another takedown. Knight working rubber guard underneath, but Rinaldi shucks aside the legs after an omo plata attempt. Rinaldi doing well on top, landing a few punches here and there, but really just holding the better position and not letting himself get in trouble underneath. Knight busy from his back with strikes and looking for angles, but he’s just not able to really get anything going. Rinaldi finishes on top, and MMAjunkie gives him the round, 10-9.

Round 2 – Rinaldi with an early low kick. He looks very strong and is moving well. Knight looking to strike, but Rinaldi moving well and drives forward with a takedown that sees him moving almost immediately into side control. He spins out to north-south and traps the head. Thinks kimura, but Knight transitions. Rinaldi follows and slips to the back, immediately locking in a body-triangle. Rinaldi in control on the back and showing an excellent ability to switch the hooks to the best available position. Knight trying to throw punches behind his head while defending choke attempts, but he is absolutely trapped. Rinaldi in complete control. Rinaldi goes after the choke, and Knight wags his finger. Still, Rinaldi finishes on the back. MMAjunkie gives it to Rinaldi, 10-8.

Round 3 – Knight going to need a finish. He’s in the center and looking to strike. Rinaldi shoots, and Knight stuffs it, pushing his opponent away and resetting in the center. Knight slips around to his opponent’s back and drags him to the floor. Rinaldi with a slick kimura sweep and then starts to look for the finish. Knight steps over his arm to defend. Rinaldi has to let go but immediately secures the back. Body triangle is back in place. Rinaldi in control once again. Rinaldi punchign from the back and looking for a chance to lock in the choke. He gets it on the chin, but Knight grimaces and finds a way slip free. Knight showing his durability, but he needs something special here. Rinaldi has just been overwhelming from the back control. Knight stands and tries to dive forward to shake off his opponent, but Rinaldi stays firm. Less than a minute. Rinaldi won’t get the finish, but he’s beaten a frustrated Knight. MMAjunkie gives Rinaldi the round, 10-8, awading him the fight 30-25.

Derek Brunson vs. Israel Adesanya

Round 1 – Adesanya has the center, and he’s forced to defend in the clinch immediately, with Brunson wrapping the body and pushing the action to the fence. Brunson warned for grabbing the shorts, and Adesanya flips him off when referee Herb Dean calls time to issue a warning. Adesanya with a clean jab on the restart. Brunson shoots, and Adesanya sprawls and is able to spin and turn away. However, Adesanya turns back to engage, and Brunson is able to grab him again. Adesanya still defends well and again is able to pull free and reset on the missed takedown. Brunson reached down to grab the leg, but it’s not there. Adesanya sees it, and a knee will certainly be coming soon. Brunson slips a punch and gets the bodylock, pressing Adesanya to the cage. Dean calls for action, and Adesanya is able to break free. Brunson chases and is tagged with a the knee you knew was coming. Flying knee comes in. Punches score. Brunson in trouble in the closing seconds. Uppercut lands. Left hand scores, and Brunson falls, and Dean calls the fight in the final seconds of the first.
