UFC 232 discussion thread

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – MMAjunkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC 232 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:15 p.m. ET (3:15 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (22-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) meets Alexander Gustafsson (18-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) in a rematch. The winner will become the new 205-pound title. Jones won the first fight more than five years ago by unanimous decision.

In the co-feature, women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg (20-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) takes on bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes (16-4 MMA, 9-1 UFC) in a superfight. Nunes is moving up 10 pounds in an attempt to become a dual champion.

Brian Kelleher vs. Montel Jackson

Round 1 – Quick start with punches and kicks traded immediately at the start. Kelleher chopping at the legs as he circles. He lands to the groin, but we carry on. Jackson landing with kicks to the body in return. Kelleher tries to drive forward with for a takedown, but he’s stuffed. Jackson tags him with a big elbow up top and sends him backwards. Jackson punching away as Kelleher covers. Referee watching closely. Punches not getting through clean, so Jackson turns to the D’Arce choke. It’s in tight, and Jackson keeps the squeeze. Hold is tight, and Kelleher has to tap.

Curtis Millender vs. Siyar Bahadurzada

Round 1 – Millender paws a jab and then kicks at the legs. Front kick misses up the middle. Bahadurzada charges forward with a punch that misses. Millender relaxed as he holds the center. Millender still kicking that lead leg, chopping at the knee. Bahadurzada kicks to the body and misses the big overhand. Millender using his range well, keeping Bahadurzada away. Heavy kick to the leg for Millender. Spinning high kick partially lands for Millender, but Bahadurzada shakes it off. Bahadurzada charges with overhand punches, but Millender easily pulls away. Millender smiling as he jabs, looking incredibly relaxed. Bahadurzada trying to turn up the pressure, launching huge punches that are mostly coming up short. Millender’s jab continues to chip away. Bahadurzada does sneak in a left hand. One minute left. Millender high kick blocked. Bahadurzada shakes his head after he’s tagged with a pair of jabs. Technical work for Millender, and MMAjunkie gives him the first round, 10-9.

Round 2 – Bahadurzada aggressive early. He wants a brawl. Millender gets back out to range and launches the jab. Every punch Bahadurzada throws is with power, but his hooks are coming up short. Bahadurzada starting to kick the legs a bit. His punches are dangerous, but Millender managing the range well. Bahadurzada does land a big right. Millender with a leaping knee. Uppercut lands inside. He’s turning up the heat now. Bahadurzada’s nose is bloodied. They clinch, and Millender briefly holds a Thai plum before pulling away. Bahadurzada throwing straighter punches now, and he’s having some success. Millender still landing the crisp jab, though. Spinning elbow missed for Millender, and that allows Bahadurzada to grab the body and trip the action to the floor, immediately taking top position. Millender working from half-guard. He lands a few knees to the body. Not doing a ton with the position right now, as Millender hods tight underneath. Bahadurzada does get some room to elevate and strike, and he finishes the round in top position. Close, but MMAjunkie awards the late work for Bahadurzada, 10-9.

Round 3 – Millender again kicks the leg to open, looking to keep range. Bahadurzada wants a brawl. High action to start the third before they settle and look to strike. Millender lands a clean left. Bahadurzada lands one in reply. Bahadurzada loses his mouthpiece briefly. On thee restart, he’s slugging away. Millender firs back and wobbles him. High kick lands. Bahadurzada is hurt, but he’s not going away. Millender with a clean right counter. He’s teeing off. Bahadurzada tries to shoot, but Millender easily stuffs it. More clean shots on the feet. It’s target practice right now. Bahadurzada shoots on the leg. Millender stuffs it, but Bahadurzada powers through and transitions briefly to the top. Gutsy stuff. Millender immediately gets to his knees. Bahadurzada spins around to the back. Millender patient but crawls to his feet. Bahadurzada immediately drags him down again. Millender battles quickly to his feet. They’re battling in the clinch. Millender can’t quite get free. He battles and finally breaks the grip with 90 seconds left. At range, Millender is deadly. Jab lands clean. Right hand. Bahadurzada is battered, but he lands a big right hand. Bahadurzada the one pushing the action right now, but Millender is sticking and moving. Bahadurzada shoots inside, but Millender grinds through a reversal and finishes n top. He stays there until the bell. Gutsy stuff from Bahadurzada, but MMAjunkie gives the round to Millender, 10-9, and awards him the fight 29-28.

Uriah Hall vs. Bevon Lewis

Round 1 – Kicks traded immediately. Punches follow. Quick pace. Lewis lands a right, and Hall has to back away and reset. Lewis is going after it. He pushes forward with punches and gets to the clinch, driving in a several knees. Hall pulls away and resets at range. Pace finally settling a bit. Hall misses on a spinning kick. Lewis lands a right hand over the top. Low kicks traded. Lewis tries to grab a clinch, but Hall pulls away. Lewis’ right hand is coming forward with power, but he has yet to land clean. Hall using a low kick to slow his opponent’s advances. Hall sneaks in a jab. Lewis high kick misses over the top. Hall catches a front kick but can’t do anything with it. Lewis gets in tight and lands an elbow up top in the final minute. He misses a high kick. Lewis lands a right hand. Round ends on the feet, and MMAjunkie gives it to Lewis, 10-9.

Round 2 – Lewis out quickly and kicks up top. Hall fires back with punches. Very quick start again. Hall kicks hard at the legs and misses a spinning high kick. Lewis controlling the center. He fakes a knee and partially lands a high kick. Hall seems unaffected. Hall now chopping the legs a bit. He seems a touch quicker, through Lewis is throwing everything with power. Lewis able to drive forward and hold the clinch. He pushes the action to the cage and lands a few knees to the back of the leg. Hall trying to break the grip. Lewis stomps the feet a bit. Hall finally able to turn inside, but they’re battling for position in tight. Referee Marc Goddard calls for action. Hall finally breaks the grip, and they reset, with Lewis immediately firing a high kick that’s blocked. Hall trying to get some offense going. He does land a nice spinning kick to the body. Jab lands. He calls for Lewis to turn it up and trade. MMAjunkie gives the second to Lewis, 10-9.

Round 3 – Lewis again out quickly, and they waste no time getting started. Hall complaining of an eye poke after a few Lewis punches, but Goddard tells them to fight on and says the hand was closed. Lewis presses into the clinch. Stalemate there, so Lewis lets go and lands a left in tight. Hall looks frustrated. He presses forward, and he unleashes a huge counter right hand. Lewis falls back, and this fight is over. Brutal finish.

Nathaniel Wood vs. Andre Ewell

Round 1 – Wood misses an early low kick. Ewell jabs to the body and then kicks the legs. Both men very light on their feet early. Wood holding the center. Ewell leaps forward with a knee that misses. Wood the busier man, and he’s able to land and send Ewell falling back. Wood jumps on top, but Ewell battles with underhooks and gets back to his feet. He lands a clean left, but Wood counters, as well. Left hand lands for Ewell. Wood with a right. Quick hands, and he’s stalking. Wood is pumping the right hand and finding a home. Ewell lands with a left hand. He’s in and out of range. Wood low kick trip s Ewell briefly. Wood with another low kick. Punch behind it. Both men finding their spots, but Wood seems to be getting the better of the exchanges. Wood pushes into the clinch. They battle there for position. Round ends there, and MMAjunkie leans toward Wood, 10-9.

Round 2 – Ewell more aggressive to start, and it pays off. He lands a few clean punches, but Wood able to slip under one of them and clinch, tripping the action to the floor. Ewell pulls guard as they fall. Ewell tying things up pretty well underneath, but Wood does finally posture and land a few punches. Ewell controls the wrist briefly, bu tWood pulls it free and starts looking for the hammerfist. Ewell active from his back, and he again looks to isolate the left arm, but Wood feels it and pulls free before turning back to his punches from top position. Wood not landing any concussive blows, but he’s working well from the top. Crowd getting a little restless, and so Wood postures and throws big punches to the body. Ewell’s corner calling for him to stand, but he can’t quite find the space. He gets his back briefly to the fence, but Wood pulls him back down and drives big punches to the body. Wood finishes on top, and MMAjunkie gives him the round, 10-9.

Round 3 – Ewell needs to make something happen. He’s trying to get something going, but Wood is able to slip the attacks and stay right in front of his opponent. Wood gets inside and wraps the body, looking for the takedown. Ewell sprawls and tries to stay upright, but Wood persists and gets the trip he was hunting. Ewell scrambles quickly to guard, but once again he’s on his back. Crowd doesn’t love it, but Wood happy to be again in the dominant position. Boos from the crowd. Wood is clearly in control, and he’s punching when he can, but the crowd was looking for a little more action. Ewell still hunting for options from his back, but they’re not really there. Ewell tries to scramble up, but Wood gets his back. Choke is in. Ewell battling and tries to work free, but the hold is tight. Wood rolls with his opponent and keeps the squeeze, and Ewell has to tap.

B.J. Penn vs. Ryan Hall

Round 1 – Penn aggressive to open, pushing forward and changing levels. He punches his way into the clinch, and Hall defends against the fence. Nothing there, and Hall is able to pull free. Hall slips on a kick, and Penn stands over him, kicking the legs. Hall trying to attack the legs from his back. He’s looking for upkicks, as well. Penn cautious as he tries to move forward. Hall briefly able to grab the ankle, but nothing there. Crowd boos, and the referee calls for a restart on the feet. Penn holding the center, and he pulls away from a few high kicks. Hall slips down and drives at the legs with a beautiful roll. Smooth transition catches the leg, and he trips Hall to the floor. Immediately heel hook, and Penn taps. Wow.

Douglas Silva de Andrade vs. Petr Yan

Round 1 – Yan walks forward but eats a left hand over the top. Yan answers with a high kick that partially lands. Yan the one walking forward, but Silva de Andrade content to retreat and fire big bombs to start. Yan with a spinning punch that’s blocked. Yan catches a kick and trips Silva de Andrade to the floor. Yan looking to punch, but Silva de Andrade expertly sneaks his way back to the feet. Yan lands two punches. He scores with a low kick, as well. Silva de Andrade with a beautiful uppercut. Yan remains the aggressor, but Silva de Andrade is firing back with some success. Yan with another beautiful combination. Silva de Andrade misses a spinning kick. Yan misses a high kick over the top. He lands a clean right hand, and Silva de Andrade is hurt. Another lands, but Silva de Andrade escapes and recovers. Late takedown from Yan. He lands a few punches before the bell. MMAjunkie gives it to Yan, 10-9.

Round 2 – Yan again the man walking forward. Silva de Andrade countering with power, but Yan is getting the best of the exchanges. Punches landing clean for Yan. His head movement makes him a tough target to counter. They clinch up and battle from there. Silva de Andrade putting his hands down so he’s not kneed. Yan looks for the guillotine. There’s some pressure, and Silva de Andrade has to move to adjust. He rolls down to the floor. Yan briefly in side control before Silva de Andrade spins to half-guard. Silva de Andrade turning and looking for an opportunity to rise. Yan gives him some space to move but also stays tight to the body. Yan just smothering with his positioning. Silva de Andrade tries to grab the leg, but Yan spins through it and is again in top position. Punches and elbows coming from the top. Yan is all over him. Teeing off in the final seconds. Silva de Andrade makes it to the bell, but he is battered. MMAjunkie gives it to Yan, 10-8.

Cat Zingano vs. Megan Anderson

Round 1 – Zingano sets up well on the outside to start. She rushes in and kicks the leg, then darts back out. Second kick lands. Zingano scampering around, refusing to stay in a single spot Anderson fires a straight punch, and a high kick grazes the face. Zingano immediately turns and covers her face. It seems the toe went into the eye. Anderson isn’t sure what to do. She tries to attack, but referee Marc Goddard immediately waves off the fight with Zingano unable to open her eyes and defend.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Walt Harris

Round 1 – Harris opens up with a big kick that misses. Both men faking advances and looking for openings. Harris pushes forward into the clinch, and Arlovski backs to the cage before spinning off and reversing. Harris spins, as well, and the break and reset. Low kick from Arlovski. Harris misses a big kick. Arlovski drives forward with a right but eats a counter left. Harris lands another right hand shortly after. Back into the clinch, but nothing there. Arlovski finding a few moments of offense, but Harris swinging back with power. Heel kick misses for Arlovski. He tees off with big punches, but Harris continues to find a home for his counters. Harris seems content to counter for now, and it’s working, though he is allowing Arlovski opportunities to attack. Low kick for Arlovski. Round ends on the feet, and MMAjunkie leans toward Harris, 10-9.

Round 2 – Arlovski rushes forward with a right hand and complains of an eye poke. Referee Mike Beltran tells them to fight on. On the next exchange, he complains again, and this time we do get a stoppage. Arlovski is not happy, but he gets a break and Harris gets a warning. Harris apologizes, and we start again. Side kick for Arlovski and then an uppercut. Harris drives under his opponent’s big right hand and takes him to the floor. Arlovski quick to turn to his knees and reset on the feet. Arlovski a little hesitant as he tries to pick his shots. Harris waiting to counter. Crowd restless as Arlovski misses on a high kick. Right hands traded. Big left lands for Harris. Arlovski right blocked. Arlovski defends a takedown and lands a right hand. Harris kicks the body and lands a right over the top. Arlovski answers with a right and slips the counter. Arlovski lands a kick to the body. Round ends on the feet. It’s another close one. MMAjunkie leans toward Harris 10-9.

Round 3 – Arlovski needs to get something going. Unfortunately for him, Harris’ counters have made it tough. Harris lands a big left. Arlovski stunned, but he fights it off. Harris trying to pressure a bit. Harris with a right over the top. Arlovski seems to be fading a bit, and Harris is getting a second wind. Arlovski just can’t get any real offense going, and Harris doesn’t seemed too concerned with anything that’s thrown. Arlovski briefly holds a clinch, but it’s not there. Arlovski right lands, but Harris unaffected. Arlovski rushes but can’t land anything. Crowd boos the lack of action. Arlovski does land a right hand. Harris blocks another. Just noting sustained coming from Arlovski. He does kick the leg. Round ends on the feet. MMAjunkie gives the final round to Arlovski, 10-9, but gives the fight to Harris 29-28.
