The buildup to UFC 223 was one of the most memorable weeks in the history of mixed martial arts.

A quick refresher course: Khabib Nurmagomedov was supposed to fight UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson to fill vacated, full 155-pound title. Then Ferguson tripped over a production cable during a media day at the FOX lot in Los Angeles, tore ligaments, and had to pull out of the fight. Then featherweight champ Max Holloway agreed to take the fight on six days’ notice. Then Conor McGregor showed up at the arena in Brooklyn and assaulted a fighter van containing Nurmagomedov and others following a media day. The the day before the fight, the New York State Athletic Commission pulled Holloway during his weight cut, deeming it unsafe, while McGregor was arraigned in a New York courtroom over the van attack. Then Al Iaquinta, who had been scheduled to fight Paul Felder, agreed to step in and face Nurmagomedov, but he missed championship weight, so only the latter was eligible to win the belt.

Other than that, though, it was a really uneventful week.

Anyway, fight night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn turned into the crowning moment of Nurmagomedov’s career, as he earned a one-sided unanimous decision over Iaquinta to earn the belt. But not before the all-heart Iaquinta rallied in the final round and kept Nurmagomedov honest as he went for a knockout to steal the fight.
