UFC Fight Night 138 play-by-play and live results

MONCTON, Canada – MMAjunkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC Fight Night 138 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at SMG Moncton in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. The main card airs on FS1 following prelims on FS2 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, recent title challenger Volkan Oezdemir (15-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) takes on Anthony Smith (29-13 MMA, 6-3 UFC) in a light heavyweight bout. Oezdemir is the betting favorite at nearly 2-1. In the co-feature, Michael Johnson (18-13 MMA, 10-9 UFC) is a heavy favorite at 6-1 over Artem Lobov (13-14-1 MMA, 2-4 UFC) in their lightweight fight. Johnson took the bout on less than two weeks’ notice.

Current Fight

Gian Villante vs. Ed Herman

Round 1 – Jabs thrown early, but Villante adds a few big right hands behind them. Herman kicks the legs. He leaps forward and gets clipped by a jab. Both throw right hands that just miss. Both men are just digging in and throwing haymakers. Herman has a little cut just on the inside edge of his left eye. Herman with a stiff jab. Both men just loading up on right hands. Villante lands clean and slips his opponent’s strike. A Villante left scores. Herman was briefly wobbled but seems OK now. Not a quick pace, but everything being thrown at full power. It’s all just big shots with the hands. Herman lands clean at the end. MMAjunkie gives a close first to Villante, 10-9.

Round 2 – Doctor checks Herman’s cut, but it’s under the eye and not an issue, so we carry on. Both men back to throwing at full power. Villante complaining of an eye poke, but we fight on, and Herman capitalizes while his opponent is a little out of sorts. Villante has some blood on the bridge of his nose. Herman the one walking forward now, showing no regard for his opponent’s power. Villante does seem to be slowing a bit. Herman busier and seems more accurate, as well. The jab is landing, and Villante isn’t finding the mark as often with his single blows. Herman briefly loses his mouthpiece, but we reset quickly. Villante does score with a right, but Herman right back with straight shots of his own. One minute left, and Villante’s legs buckle just a bit. Herman accurate and comfortable in the pocket. Big punches to close, and MMAjunkie leans toward Herman in this round, 10-9.

Stevie Ray vs. Jessin Ayari

Round 1 – Touch of gloves starts the night. Ayari takes the center, and Ray moves laterally on the outside. Low kicks from Ray to open. He punches to the body, as well, slipping the reply. Ayari very upright in the center, but Ray is the busier man, moving side to side. Ayari looking to set up counters, and he does find some success throwing back at Ray. Two punches land inside for Ayari. He seems the more powerful man, but Ray takes it all in stride in the early going. Ayari getting the timing down as we carry on, and it’s slowing Ray’s offense. Ray does land a nice side kick to the body. Still, Ayari holding the center, looking the larger man, and he’s finding a home for a right hand. They clinch at the close. Very close opening round, but MMAjunkie leans toward Ayari, 10-9.

Round 2 – Ray still the busier man in terms of movement, and he is chopping at the legs. Ayari briefly pushes inside but moves back to the center. Moderate pace from both me. Ayari still in the center. Ayari tries to turn up the head a little bit, but Ray touches him on the chin, halting the advance. Still, Ayari looks incredibly relaxed in the pocket, unconcerned with the replies from his opponent. Ray is staying busy, though, and he’s having success with his hands, in addition to the kicks. Ayari still landing the biggest shots while content to counter. Not a ton between the two, but MMAjunkie again lands slightly toward Ray, 10-9.

Round 3 – Ayari again gets the center. He’s held the position throughout the fight. Ray stating busy, though. He’s on the outside, but he’s the more active man. They move into the clinch, but nothing there. Ayari’s hands are sharp when he lets them go. Ray with a nice low kick to left hand over the top. Ayari with a stiff right, and an uppercut lands clean. Ray shows no ill effects. Ayari landing the best strikes. Ray not afraid to mix it up, but he’s not getting the best of it. Ray’s face now busted up a bit. He calls for a brawl. Ayari responds by wagging his chin and firing left hands. Fight comes to an end. MMAjunkie leans toward Ayari, 10-9, awarding him the fight 29-28.

Arjan Bhullar vs. Marcelo Golm

Round 1 – Jabs traded to open. Golm kicks the legs. Bhullar seems to want to push the pace to start. He’s trying to press, though Golm is continuing to kick the lead leg. Bhullar briefly has a clinch and knees the body. Golm sweep Bhullar off his feet with a low kick. Bhullar pops up to reset, but his leg is battered already. Golm keeps chopping away. Bhullar trying to punch his way inside. He sneaks a nice left hand that staggers his opponent. That lets Bhullar push inside to the clinch. However, Golm deals with it well and pulls back to the center. Big Golm high kick just misses, and he eats a right hand counter. Bhullar’s leg is reddened, but he’s walking through the blows and getting inside with punches. Ends on the feet, and MMAjunkie gives it to Bhullar, 10-9.

Round 2 – Quick pace to open the second, and Golm scores with a big knee before pushing inside. Bhullar eventually spins off the cage and looks to change levels on a single-leg, but Golm bounces away. Quick to the clinch, and Bhullar’s team calls for him to back away. He does, scoring on the break, but Golm right back to work with a powerful flurry of punches that lands. Bhullar’s leg is bruised already, but he’s pushing forward. He moves into the clinch, and Golm defends against the cage, pummeling for underhooks. Grinding pace in the second, and MMAjunkie gives the round to Bhullar, 10-9.

Round 3 – Golm’s right foot very swollen, and Bhullar’s corner picked up on it. At the start of the round, Bhullar again pushing forward, moving briefly into the clinch, but Golm defending well there. Bhullar finally gets inside, and he wraps Golm at the waist, lifts him in the air and walks a few steps toward the fence before dumping his foe to the floor. Bhullar gets inside his opponent’s guard and goes to work. Golm trying to tie up the wrist while working on his back, but Bhullar stays busy enough on top, grinding away with short little punches and forearms from the top. Bhullar’s corner asks him to move to half-guard, and he does, though Golm is able to regain guard rather quickly. One minute left, and Golm is stuck. He finally gets his back to the fence, but Bhullar pulls him quickly back to the canvas. Golm scrambles to his feet in the final seconds, but it’s too late. Round ends, and MMAjunkie gives it to Bhullar, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27.

Te Edwards vs. Don Madge

Round 1 – Quick pace to start, with both men unleashing big punches in the pocket. Madge lands first, dropping Edwards with a clean shot. He rushes forward, but Edwards able to scramble to top position, shaking out the cobwebs and settling into his opponent’s guard. Madge has control of the wrists and deftly slips into an armbar. Quick move, and Edwards’ arm is in danger. Somehow, he doesn’t tap. Incredibly tense, but Edwards survives. Edwards threatens with an omo plata, as well, but Edwards able to pull free and climb to his feet. Madge kicks the knees a bit, and Edwards settles back to the floor. Edwards stands, and he postures, leading to restart from the referee. Edwards with a huge right hand that misses on the restart. They move into the clinch, where a great first round ends. MMAjunkie gives it to Madge, 10-9.

Round 2 – Madge out quickly. Left high kick blocked, but it still seems to rattle Edwards a bit. Edwards tries to move left, and Madge throws the head kick again, this time from the right. It lands clean, and Edwards crashes to the floor. Brutal finish.

Sarah Moras vs. Talita Bernardo

Round 1 – Moras with her hands high, holding the center, but Bernardo still sneaks a big shot through the guard. Moras looks confident walking forward. Her nose is reddened, but she lands a crisp few punches that briefly stun her opponent. Moras nearly ducks into a high kick. Moderate pace here early, but it’s all on the feet. Both women having success with their hands. Bernardo shoots and gets deep on a takedown, but Moras able to push her away. Bernardo gets a high kick to partially land and unleashed a barrage of punches. Bernardo on the attack. Moras clinches and slows things down. Bernardo gets a bodylock and is able to drag Moras to the canvas. Moras with a few elbows from her back. Bernardo able to advance to side control, though Moras quickly recovers guard. Still, Bernardo holds top position until the bell, when she rolls for a guillotine choke. Can’t get the finish. MMAjunkie gives it to Bernardo, 10-9.

Round 2 – Moras looks fresh enough, and she remains confident on the feet. She’s the aggressor on the feet, but Bernardo doing a fine job of countering, as well. Both women again having success with their strikes. Bernardo’s high kick sneaky quick, as well. Moras’ hands look heavy, but Bernardo answering back with quick combinations that find the mark. Bernardo moves inside and hits an outside trip, bringing her opponent to the canvas. Bernardo has a quick gift wrap control, but Moras gets the arm free. Moras getting half-guard underneath, but Bernardo in control. She gets briefly to side control. Flexible Moras kicks her legs high and hooks the head, but Bernardo pulls free and settles back on top, where it finishes. MMAjunkie gives it to Bernardo, 10-9.

Round 3 – Moras follows her corner’s instructions and shoots immediately at the start, driving through and taking top position. Bernardo comfortable on her back though, and hits a beautiful sweep to the top, again taking the dominant spot. Moras tries to threaten from her back, looking for a kimura, but it’s not there. Bernardo again pushes out to side control. Moras again gets her legs high and threatens to hook the neck, but Bernardo shucks it off with relative ease. Bernardo advances again and moves to north-south, locking in an inverted triangle for a bit. Moras refuses to stay still on her back, and she does create room to stand with 90 seconds left. Bernardo inside with a sweet little takedown, but Moras with a roll to the top. She goes after the neck, but Bernardo able to slip free. Bernardo now back in control after a few tense moments. She backs away, and Moras stands and follows. They strike until the bell. MMAjunkie gives it again to Bernardo, 10-9, giving her the fight 30-27.

Calvin Kattar vs. Chris Fishgold

Round 1 – Fishgold out quickly, and he shoots inside and drives the action to the canvas. Kattar right back to his feet, and Fishgold looks for the guillotine, but it’s not there. Fishgold lands with a few big punches in tight. Very aggressive early. Kattar calm and looks unconcerned with the early work, but Fishgold definitely having some success. Big power punches swinging from Fishgold. Kattar now coming alive, swinging back and launching a flying knee. Kattar’s jab now landing clean, and Fishgold’s left cheek split open. Still, Fishgold is firing off big hooks, still having some success. Feels like momentum has shifted though. Kattar just technical in his approach. Two-punch combination drops Fishgold. Kattar seizes the moment and rushes on top. Punches fly, and referee Yves Lavigne calls an end to the action.

Thibault Gouti vs. Nasrat Haqparast

Round 1 – Haqparast moving rapidly on the outside, leaping forward with big punches from range, attacking from all angles. He complains of an eyepoke, and we take a quick break. On the restart, Gouti looking to trade shots on the feet, but Haqparast’s speed sees him get in and out of range without issue. Haqparast landing the biggest punches early, but Gouti handling them well. Big left sends Gouti to the floor, but he crawls immediately to his feet. Haqparast in control, looking incredibly dangerous on the feet. Gouti still looking to return fire, and he digs to the body. He lands a few strikes at the end, but MMAjunkie gives it to Haqparast, 10-9.

Round 2 – Spilled ice delays the start of the frame, but Gouti out quick once the round starts. Gouti more aggressive to open. He seems to be gaining some confidence, and the body shot lands again. Haqparast still firing heavy punches, but Gouti is a lot busier and dictating the pace for the time being. Haqparast still dangerous with everything he throws, but he’s seeing his volume drop. He does land clean, and Gouti’s nose busted up and bleeding. Haqparast kick to the body stuns Gouti. He shakes it off. It’s Gouti with the volume, Haqparast with the power. Bell sounds, and it’s a better round for Gouti, but MMAjunkie gives it to Haqparast, 10-9.

Round 3 – Gouti again looking to attack, but it’s Haqparast that lands first stunning his opponent with a big shot to the body. Haqparast kicks the body again, and Gouti is hurt. He covers against the cage. Haqparast trying to finish with a flurry of punches. Gouti running away to try and reset. Haqparast follows and the push down to the floor. Haqparast on top. He stands and delivers a massive punch as he dives back to the floor. Haqparast in control. Gouti showing heart and surviving, but he’s being mauled from the top. Gouti looks to be exhausted and probably a little dazed. Still, he’s not giving up. Gouti crawls to his feet in the final minute. He’s throwing big strikes, looking to get some kind of miracle. Spinning high kick just misses. Flying knee from Gouti, who finishes in style. Still, MMAjunkie gives it to Haqparast, 10-9, giving him the fight 30-27.

Nordine Taleb vs. Sean Strickland

Round 1 – Strickland pressing forward, firing out his jab and looking to attack. Taleb moving well in retreat, slipping and countering. Good pace to start. Strickland the one walking forward, but Taleb continues to find spots to land a counter left. Taleb slipping in a few low kicks along the way. Strickland content to use his jab, occasionally adding in the right hand behind it. Taleb’s nose reddened, but he’s still content to retreat and counter, and he is having some success. He’s the busier man, despite moving backward. Leg kick again from Taleb. More follow. Round ends on the feet, and MMAjunkie gives it to Taleb, 10-9.

Round 2 – Strickland opens in similar fashion. He’s moving forward, firing the jab, but Taleb is slipping and capitalizing on the counters. The routine is set, until Strickland lands a clean right hand that sends XX to the floor. XX quickly gets back to his feet, but now Strickland is opening up a bit, firing the right hand, as well. Another big right hand sends XX to the floor. Strickland jumps on top and looks to punch. Strickland dives in with a big right hand. Referee jumps in to call it off. It came after a big shot, but XX isn’t happy and instantly protests. Still, this fight is over.

Alex Garcia vs. Court McGee

Round 1 – McGee out quickly with a kick to the body and a jab that comes up short. McGee keeps his guard high, and he kicks the legs of his opponent. Garcia misses on a big hook over the top. They look for angles to attack, and McGee ultimately slips inside and wraps the body. They grind in tight. Garcia gets a takedown, but he can’t get on top, and McGee pops back up to his feet. Garcia stays tight and briefly takes the back, but McGee battles the hands and is able to pull free after a few tense moments. They reset on the feet. Garcia lands a stiff right hand to the ear, but McGee shakes it off. Garcia looks like he may already be tiring just a little. McGee ducks in with a takedown, but it’s with only seconds left. Close round, but MMAjunkie leans toward Garcia, 10-9.

Round 2 – Garcia comes out throwing power. McGee slips it and lands a clean shot that sends his opponent to the floor. McGee jumps on top and tries to finish the fight with punches, though Garcia is able to slow things down a bit and hold on. Closed guard from the bottom. Garcia just wants a restart. McGee’s corner begging for him to get busy and keep the position. He postures a bit and lands some punches. McGee’s corner wants him to stay here as time winds down. But with 90 second left, Garcia gets the reset that he wanted. Garcia with a quick takedown, but McGee immediately back to his feet and slipping to the outside. McGee gets another takedown. Late in the round, but he punches away until the end. MMAjunkie gives the round to McGee, 10-9.

Round 3 – Fight likely hangs in the balance. Both men come out swinging to start. Still, Garcia appears a little hesitant. He ducks inside for a single, but it misses, and it’s McGee who slips out and returns the favor. Takedown not there. McGee switches to a double, but Garcia with a perfect switch. McGee has to scramble to reverse. They battle for position in what could prove a key series. Garcia gets to the top, and McGee looks to get up. That lets Garcia take the back. McGee battles to pull free and finally does. Eventually, he turns inside and is able to establish himself in the top position. McGee stands briefly before pushing right back down. One minute left. McGee trying to score points from the top. Garcia desperate to get to his feet, but McGee is able to push him back to the floor and land a few elbows. McGee dominant to finish the round, and MMAjunkie gives him the round, 10-9, scoring the fight 29-28.
