UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn will return amid 7-fight losing streak to face Nik Lentz

UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn just set a record for consecutive losses, but he’s still not done fighting.

Instead, Penn (16-14-2 MMA, 12-13-2 UFC) will attempt to settle a long-simmering grudge with veteran Nik Lentz (30-10-2 MMA, 14-7-1 UFC), who four years ago memorialized his disdain for Penn with an insult poem.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the matchup to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, adding verbal agreements were in place for a date and location to be determined. Lentz confirmed he’s agreed to the fight in a text message to MMA Junkie.

The planned fight reverses White’s earlier position that he wouldn’t book Penn in another UFC fight after the ex-champ suffered his seventh straight loss in May at UFC 237, which set a promotional record.

In 2014, Penn called out Lentz amid a public squabble with his former nutritionist, Mike Dolce, whom he blamed for a third loss to Frankie Edgar in 2014. Lentz accepted the offer, but Penn instead retired.

Three years later, Penn decided to get back into the octagon and was routed by up-and-comer Yair Rodriguez. He resisted questions of retirement as his career continued to spiral.

Outside the cage, Penn’s has fallen into greater disarray this year. He was accused of domestic violence by his estranged partner amid a custody battle and accused of threatening a taro farmer with a machete in his native Hawaii.

Just last month, Penn was back in the headlines when a video appeared to show him grappling with a doorman at a strip club in Hawaii. He had been removed because he was behaving in a “very drunk” manner.” No charges were filed despite police being called to the scene.

Edgar, who captured the lightweight title from Penn and defended it in an immediate rematch, is one veteran fighter who’s suggested Penn should retire.

Lentz is two months removed from a TKO loss to Charles Oliveira in a trilogy fight.
