UFC on ESPN 34’s Mounir Lazzez aims to prove he’s ‘one of the best contenders in the world’

"

LAS VEGAS – It’s been more than a year since Mounir Lazzez last competed, but he’s ready to show his improvements.

After an impressive UFC debut win over Abdul Razak Alhassan in July 2020, Lazzez (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) suffered a quick stoppage loss to Warlley Alves in January 2021.

In between those fights, he was in camp prepping for David Zawada in October 2020, but he withdrew due to a positive COVID-19 test. So now that Lazzez has had plenty of time to grow as a fighter, he’s looking to remind everyone of the potential he showed in his win over Alhassan.

“When I jump from camp to camp, there is no time to learn and to adjust things,” Lazzez told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “Sometimes (having) little time like this teaches me a lot about myself, about my team, about my training – what should I adjust, what I add, what I remove so it’s all good.”

He continued, “First this fight and then we’ll take it step by step. Just win and then we keep climbing the rankings and prove that I’m one of the best contenders in the world.”

Lazzez returns against short-notice replacement and octagon newcomer Ange Loosa (8-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on Saturday at UFC on ESPN 34, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.
