UFC on ESPN 5 pre-event facts: Jim Miller retakes record for most UFC fights

One of the UFC’s most often-visited cities that has become reflected in recent years will finally see an event again on Saturday with UFC on ESPN 5, which takes place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and airs on ESPN.

A potential welterweight title eliminator is queued up for the main event, with former interim champion Colby Covington (14-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) making his return to the octagon to take on ex-champ Robbie Lawler (28-13 MMA, 13-7 UFC) in an anticipated affair.

Main event

Covington returns to competition for the first time since June 9, 2018. The 420-day layoff is the longest of his UFC career.

Covington is one of three interim UFC welterweight champions in company history. Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit also accomplished the feat.

Covington’s six-fight UFC winning streak in welterweight competition is the fifth longest active streak in the division behind Kamaru Usman (10), Leon Edwards (eight), Santiago Ponzinibbio (seven) and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos (seven).

Covington has landed 48 takedowns combined in his 10 UFC appearances.

Covington’s 48 takedowns landed in UFC welterweight competition are most among active fighters in the weight class.

Covington lands 5.63 takedowns per 15 minutes of fighting in UFC welterweight competition, the highest rate in divisional history.

Covington’s 12 takedowns landed at UFC on FOX 22 are tied for the second most in a single UFC welterweight fight. Luigi Fioravanti holds the record with 13 at UFC 82.

Lawler is 9-4 since he returned to the UFC for a second stint in February 2013.

Lawler is 1-3 in his past four fights dating back to July 2017.

Lawler became the first fighter in UFC history to force a belt to change hands by split decision when he defeated Johny Hendricks at UFC 181 in December 2014.

Lawler is one of two fighters in UFC history to win two title fights by split decision. Benson Henderson also accomplished the feat.

Lawler’s six knockout victories in UFC welterweight competition are tied for fourth most in divisional history behind Matt Brown (10), Thiago Alves (eight) and Matt Hughes (seven).

Lawler’s nine knockdowns landed in UFC welterweight competition are tied for fourth most in divisional history behind Alves (13), Jake Ellenberger (11) and Tyron Woodley (10).

Lawler’s 539 significant strikes absorbed in UFC title fights are fifth most in company history behind Jose Aldo (681), Frankie Edgar (656), Max Holloway (579) and Jon Jones (542).

Lawler’s significant strike disadvantage of -82 against Carlos Condit at UFC 195 marked the largest disparity in UFC history for a fighter who won a bout.

Lawler completes 77.3 percent of his takedown attempts in UFC competition, the highest accuracy rate in company history.

Jim Miller (30-13 MMA, 19-12 UFC) competes in his 33rd UFC bout, the most appearances in company history.

Miller competes in his 32nd UFC lightweight bout, the most in divisional history.

Miller’s total fight time of 5:05:49 in UFC lightweight competition is most in divisional history.

Miller’s 19 victories in UFC competition are tied for fifth most in company history behind Donald Cerrone (23), Demian Maia (21), Michael Bisping (20) and St-Pierre (20).

Miller’s 18 victories in UFC lightweight competition are the most in divisional history.

Miller’s 11 stoppage victories in UFC lightweight competition are tied for second most in divisional history behind Joe Lauzon (12).

Miller’s eight submission victories in UFC lightweight competition are most in divisional history.

Miller’s 41 submission attempts in UFC competition are the most in company history.

Clay Guida (35-18 MMA, 15-12 UFC), 37, is the oldest of the 24 fighters scheduled to compete at the event.

Guida is 3-1 since he returned to the UFC lightweight division in June 2017.

Guida’s 51 takedowns landed in UFC lightweight competition are second most in divisional history behind Gleison Tibau (84).

Remaining main card

Nasrat Haqparast (10-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC), 23, is the youngest of the 24 fighters scheduled to compete at the event.

Gerald Meerschaert (28-11 MMA, 4-3 UFC) has earned 26 of his 28 carer victories by stoppage. That includes all four of his UFC wins.

Meerschaert’s four stoppage victories since 2014 in UFC middleweight competition are tied for third for most in the division behind Jack Hermansson (five) and Thiago Santos (five).

Meerschaert is one of 16 fighters in UFC history to earn a submission victory by anaconda choke. He accomplished the feat at UFC Fight Night 102.

Dong Hyun Ma (16-9-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) fell to 3-2 since he dropped to the UFC lightweight division in June 2016.

Claudio Silva (13-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) enters the event on a 13-fight winning streak. He hasn’t suffered a defeat since his MMA debut in November 2007.

Darko Stosic (13-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is 1-1 since he dropped to the light heavyweight division in July 2018. He went 12-1 at heavyweight.

Preliminary card

Mickey Gall’s (5-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) average fight time of 5:50 in UFC welterweight competition is shortest among active fighters in the weight class.

Gall has earned all of his career victories by submission.

Antonina Shevchenko (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC), alongside sister and UFC champ Valentina Shevchenko, are the first pair of female siblings to compete under the UFC banner.

Matt Schnell (12-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) returns to the UFC flyweight division after a one-fight stint at bantamweight.

Lauren Murphy (10-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) is 1-1 since she dropped to the UFC flyweight division in December 2017.

Murphy has alternated wins and losses over her past six fights. She was defeated in her most recent bout at UFC Fight Night 131 in June 2018.
