Video: Was Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev the right matchup for the vacant lightweight title?
The UFC has made its decision on how they want to proceed with the vacant lightweight title.
It was never in doubt that now-former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira would be inside the cage for the next title fight following his UFC 274 win over Justin Gaethje. The question was who would be the one standing across from him?
It has recently been announced that Oliveira will meet Islam Makhachev in October at UFC 280 in a fight for the title that was vacated due to Oliveira’s weight miss against Gaethje.
Makhachev, who currently sits at No. 3 in the latest USA TODAY SPORTS/MMA Junkie rankings, gets his shot at becoming champion after winning 10 straight bouts.
Was Makhachev the right decision here or is there another top-ranked lightweight more deserving of this opportunity?
