LAS VEGAS – David Onama isn’t happy about some of the last minute changes he had to go through for UFC on ESPN 39.
The UFC featherweight was upset to see his original opponent Austin Lingo withdraw from their scheduled bout at Saturday’s event, but was relieved to find a replacement. Onama (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) took on newcomer Garrett Armfield and defeated him with a second-round arm triangle choke.
Onama got the win despite the shake up in matchups, but he admits the process came with plenty of stress.
“Yeah, man, that f*cked me up,” Onama said at the post-fight news conference. “Don’t bring him up again. F*ck, Austin Lingo.”
He later added, “I wanted that fight really bad. It was a full camp for me And me and my coaches literally worked on everything that we needed to work on for him and him pulling out in a week notice that really brought me down. It brought me down a little bit, but it’s all good. Yeah, I was disappointed.”
Onama likes the fight against Lingo, but doubts he will sign up for another booking.
“He’s not going to take that fight,” Onama said. “It is what it is. Onto the next. He’s not going to take that fight again.”
This victory marks Onama’s second consecutive win in the UFC after having lost his promotional debut in a lightweight bout against Mason Jones. The loss in his debut is his only career defeat. Onama was coming off KO win over Mexico’s Gabriel Benitez, in which he won a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus.
