Why UFC 275’s Hayisaer Maheshate knew he could win his promotional debut by knockout

"

SINGAPORE – The UFC debut for China’s Hayisaer Maheshate couldn’t have gone much better.

The Dana White’s Contender Series veteran entered his first fight with the promotion at UFC 275 to face Steve Garcia at Singapore Indoor Stadium. Slated as an underdog, Maheshate (1-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) proved oddsmakers wrong as he took out Garcia (12-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) quick fashion, making for a memorable UFC debut.

“I actually feel really good,” Maheshate told reporters through an interpreter during the post-fight news conference. “I anticipated I would win by knockout and I did that for myself.”

Maheshate credited the finish to his pre-fight study of Garcia. He said he knew his movements and needed the right opportunity to find the knockout. The exchanges were heated from the moment the fight began, but that opportunity Maheshate was looking for came 74 seconds into the fight as a counter right hand was the finishing touch to end the fight.

Although the promotion deviated from the norm and dished out bonuses to every finish on the card, Maheshate’s performance was worthy of an extra $50,000 even under the typical circumstances where only four winners are awarded.

With such a quick outing, Maheshate hopes he can turn around and fight on the upcoming UFC 281 card in October, which is set to take place in Abu Dhabi.
